I am getting really tired of breaking my 200R and am thinking of going to one of these. How many of you have one and what is your opinion of the way it performs on the street and the strip? What is your cruising rpm at 60mph? Like I said I am really tired of breaking my tranny and need some advise on the TH400.
Thanks

Well, I don't have it in the GN but I do in the GSX. I had it rebuilt in 1984 and it is still going strong as it did when I had it rebuilt. As far as cruising on the highway, I much prefer the overdrive on the 200r. The GSX has 3.73's and I'm at 3000 rpm's at 60 mph.

Well, it definitely isnt as good on the street as the 2004-R is, if it was really necessary you'd get by just fine. As for the track......thats when you'll see the difference, it will hold up SEVERAL times better than the 200 will. And it the long run it'll probably be cheaper to build the 400 as you dont need as many specialty hard parts, ie. billet etc., to run the number. My dad built the 400 in his GN 4 yrs ago and never had problems with it breaking at all, and he doesnt even have the "best" of everything in it. HTH Good luck

You'll lose a tenth in the 1/4 with the 400...If you don't need OD, and your going to run in the 10's or lower, than i'd consider getting one. A 200 will hold up pretty well in the 10's with a good build and a good cooler.

HEY BRADY-

i know over the years you have had lots of transmission issues with that 200-

a buddy of mine here in KC did the swap on his 87 GN-
he had a trans shop rebuild and install a turbo 350 in his GN-

im no trans expert, but ive always heard that the 350 doesnt eat up as much horse power as the 400  or you dont lose as much power to the wheels with the 350...

contact my buddy eric marshall (ate pizza with us in BG at the all you can eat pizza shop) at www.turbotweak.com
and ask him some questions about the details-

i know he would be more than happy to help you out with your questions-

ps-

see ya in BG :)

Thank you to everyone who replied, I am just very aggrevated right now. I will probably do a swap in the future but will probably try one more repair on the 200 for now. Thanks again.

I feel your pain

I feel your pain. After numerous(and I do mean numerous) R&R on my 2004r I gave up too. I got an adapter, shortened the drive shaft and made a plate for the crossmember(actually a good friend has a trans shop). Then I went with the 700r4, built mostly with '90 Corvette internals(This tells when it was built). I haven't had any trans failures since. This got me a deeper 1st gear and a taller OD(4th). This might not be for you but it solved my problem. Good luck.

Rich

Wasn't there a company, Gear Vendors I think, that made overdrive units for the older automatics like the TH400, 727 ect.?

Where are you running ET wise that you keep breaking these transmissions? Like Scott said, if you are running in the 10's (mid to high in my opinion) you should be OK. I know Rich Rezes at Rich's Custom Auto has had a 200R in his 10 GN for years. I can't say for sure but he's been in the high 10's for 3-4 years now with no breakage. If you have a trans brake in the 200R you will be rebuilding it a lot, just no way around it.

Hey, I got a th400 from PTC they build me one and i loved it... it shift better and I have not complaind i would recommend that you get it build with a full manual transmission and a 9.5 torque convertor at 3200 stall...you can check ptc website...they are good peoples and their works is execellent and they stand behind their works....

Damn thats a trip down memory lane..

Brady, if you get this... You coming to BG this year?

This is what I will run in my 67'rs Camaro ... a th400 with the G.Vendors overdrive kit. My kit actually doubles the gears, so I have a 6 speed auto th400 ( well, it adds an overdrive to every gear ).

I really wanted to use 4.10's and not worry about highway cruising ---

I've always had a 200-4R in my race car...with the original motor running mid 11's and now with the built motor that I've been running for 3+ years in the mid to low 10 range...this is with a transbrake...I did put in a freshened 200-4R about a year ago but didn't really have to...old one was working fine...just felt I had pushed it pretty hard for years and it was time to retire it...the 200 can last if it's built right...
