for an 85 w/ light mods, just for the track would the th400 be better, i am interested in rebuilding the tranny myself and seems like the 400 is a lot cheaper. I know i need a manual VB but is there anything else i need to know pros and cons, its more of a cost thing, money is tight!! can you rebuild the 2004r easy enough with simple tools?

do a search... lots of threads about this. 400 to me is a waste especially in a "85 w/ light mods" car.. I "think" a 200 could handle that kind of power

What he said. No need for a 400 for car described. If you decide to move on to the 400 its an easy swap.

at about the cost to rebuild each, , thats one reason i was thinking the 400, was told its easier to build yourself and cheaper since i dont need a high hp unit?

The advantages of a turbo 400 are that they will hold up to a great deal of power and aren't that expensive. Weight wise I think they might be slighty heavier. The disatvantage is if you drive the car on the street you'll loose overdrive and at highway speeds you'll loose mileage and have higher rpms. If you're not producing that much power you could use a turbo 350 and those are still really cheap and will hold up quite well. As far as tools a friend and I rebuildt a 350 in the garage once out of nessesity and the only problem we had was getting the rear piston out and in. It took both of us and a couple of long sticks to depress it. It worked and the tranny is still in the car running after 10 years so I guess we did it right.
