The more springs with a higher rate there are in the clutch pack the FIRMER it will shift. This at first look may seem incorrect but it isnt. The more backpressure there is on the piston(within realistic design parameters)the higher the clutch apply pressure will be in the circuit when the piston moves. This is why the low performance 2004r direct clutch was assembled w/12 springs and the higher performance/output engines had 16.There is air trapped in the circuit that must be squeezed out as well as the size of the cavity. On an air check you can move the piston to apply position with 30 psi or 200 psi.If the piston is allowed to start to mave at a lower pressure there is a loss in firmness and initial apply force. The heavir springs also provide a cleaner 3/2 kickdown. Also the heavy spring will improve transbrake release on any STAGE RITE or electric brake in use.
