King Diamond hurt his back and has to have surgery. Doctors told him no performing for 6 to 8 months.;)

Yup, that's why there's no tour right now. He said he could either go on the road and risk shortening his career/health, or heal completely and keep performing for years. So he's resting right now.

Anyways, the term "Metal God" makes me think more of a singular guy/frontman than an entire band, and I've never really looked at music that way. That's what I like about metal, it's not about celebrities, but for the sake of this thread, I'll say Lemmy, Ozzy (despite his most recent reality-show years), and a little King Diamond. Other than that I normally just pay attention to bands as one single entity, half the time I don't even know anyone's name in the bands I like.

In terms of bands, I could go on forever. I've been into it for a long time, seen many friends come and go and get "burnt out" on metal, but I never get sick of it.

I listen to many different forms of metal, but what really started it for me, and what I find myself listening to most often, is 80s thrash/speed metal. Megadeth, Anthrax, Testament, Sepultura, Exodus, Laaz Rockit, etc etc. I have to specify I only like the OLDER releases from those bands, the worst thing about thrash is that these bands don't know when to stop. New Megadeth sucks, Exodus is iffy, Slayer is still in it just to offend people, Sepultura turned into hardcore, etc etc. I know a lot of these bands feel they are keeping metal "alive" but honestly some of them need to quit while they're ahead, some of these newer "metal" albums are embarrassing to the legacy the bands made in the past.

This is just the tip of the iceberg, I could ramble on and bore you all to death. But it's about time we have a "metal" related thread around here, I figured if I started one nobody else would be into it.

If you are referring to one single person, that would have to be James Hetfield. He has sold more albums than all the bands on here combined.

JH with Metallica have sold about 90 million world wide while Black Sabbath have sold about 150 million worlwide...not sure if this number is including Ozzys solo stuff, but Sabbath also have 12 yrs on Metallica

Zepp have sold about 300 million worldwide

Damn man I see where you came up with this thread. You call me while I'm watching "Talking Metal" & start discussing the "metal god". I too don't care if Halford packs fudge, he's still (& the ONLY) METAL GOD!

chopped39 I agree with you on the crooked cross. Where's Freddie when you need him :)

Black Sabbath. They picked up where Deep Purple left off and defined the genre.

Yes given a lot of the early material Deep Purple is arguable, but by the time Blackmore left and formed Rainbow (with Ronnie James Dio) there wasn't a whole lot to pick from metal-wise until Judas Priest or Thin Lizzy in the early 70's. Zep, The who, The Kinks, Stones or Clapton could hardly be considered metal. Closest things to american metal would be Ramones, Angel or Mountain, and that is stretching it a bit.

Ahh Ic what you were getting at.

And during the mid 70s Sabbath put out that alfull technical ecstasy and your right, there wasnt much to choose from and BOC crept right in

Montrose and Robin Trower's bridge of sighs, ZZtop, Skynyrd, all good ole hard rock but not metal...im rammblin..need my coffee
