my friend claims that the new 2005 mustang GTs are going to come factory with a super charger and about 400 hp. and he said it will be the normal price like 20-something-thousand, or whatever GT's go for these days.

i personally dont think ford will putting that much power into a 'cheap' car like that, i would think that only the cobras and such would have that. and i dont think that the government would like everyone running around with 400+ hp cars

anyone know anything about these cars? or is my friend just talking out his rear end again?

Your Friend is confused. A 400 HP Cobra will be available eventually, but will be limited production, just like now.

Base GT will probably have 260 or so hp, just like now.

Actually your friend is correct. I hate to admit it but I sat there at the New York autoshow drooling at the new mustang. The rep repeatidly said that the GT version will come with a 400hp Supercharged motor and that shelby will have its own version of the mustang.

Haha, your friend is a real comedian. No way Ford is going to sell the new Mustang with blower for much less than 40k. The current Cobra is already 35k. The new Mustang is a much better product (yes I've seen one in person) and I'd be very surprised if it wasn't more expensive to manufacture. I like the Cobras, just don't expect to get one for anywhere in the 20k range. With the demise of the F-body, the 20k performance market is dead.

Ford is expecting to sell a boat load of these cars. The more cars they build, the cheaper they will be. The car would be cheaper to make if they sold twice as many, and with this desighn so well received, selling 200k units plus like they did in the 60's with almost half as many people living in the US might not be a problem. As for all of the GT's coming with a blow 400hp motor priced in the 20k range, I SERIOUSLY dobt it. Ford is going to have to meet CAFE mpg standards, and I don't think Ford wants to put 10's or hundreds of thousands of 400hp cars in the hands of teenagers.

If the price is right on it, I don't care if it's "just" got 300 HP, 260 might be too much of a compromise. It does look kind of heavy. That's a great looking car, and there'll be plenty of aftermarket support right off the bat. I'm not a drag racer though, so I might be in the minority. I just like cool cars. ;) I'd rather have that 2005 with less power but much better styling than a new Cobra with more power but 20 year old styling. Feels odd to say that, but this is one cool car. I'm sure they'll leave room for lots of retro special editions, like the Mach, Boss, Sprint etc.

Remember just a few years ago when a car with 200 HP was good news?

The new Mustang will debut as advertised, but the Cobra won't be in the picture for another year.

Isn't the '03 Cobra around 400 HP (like 390?). For $35k (sticker - some dealers are actually dealing on them). I'd say the 400 HP Mustang is here, then.

My brother got his ass handed to him by one 2 nights ago in his '02 WS6 TA. You don't get an appreciation for how fast they are until you're in a "fast" car and they leave you like you weren't even moving. Awesome cars.

Those "reps" at autoshows are sales people.

2003 Cobra Production is less than 10K cars total.

2004 will be similar.

Ford is planning to sell that many '05 GT's in a month. Where will the 1000% increase in supercharger production come from?

300HP, maybe. 400HP, no way.

There's a fairly small Ford dealer near me who has a half dozen Cobras. Let's face it, as appealing as the car is on paper, there are only so many people who are going to buy a $35,000 Mustang making 390 HP, with zero headroom and horrible insurance rates. I mean, a kid can't afford it, and once you "grow up" you buy a Bimmer, right?

I expect there will be a bunch of Cobras left over, and deals to be had.

There are already deals to be had on 03's. When they first came out, you couldn't get one for MSRP. Now, almost a year later, they can be had at a discount, if you shop around. As an FYI, it appears total production will be over 10k, though I don't have the exact numbers. There are quite a few running around.

As for the 05....lots of speculation, but I wouldn't hang my hat on anything. I certainly would not expect a 400 HP GT coming in at $25k. While that's a nice pipedream, it is just that - a pipedream.

What engine the GT will have really isn't known for sure. Anthing from a slightly-warmed version of the 260 HP 2V 4.6, to a 300-ish HP 3V 4.6, to even a 300+ HP 4V 4.6 has been batted around. Those that are interested will just have to wait and see.

I have also heard the new Cobra won't debut till 06. Can't confirm, but have heard.

And finally, Ford had the 05 Mustang Concept at last weekend'd NMRA race in Ohio. Neat car. Some will absolutely hate it - but I suspect it will do quite well.

You are right, Bob. I just did a search of the local Dallas Dealers and I found 30 of them in inventory (Coupes and Converts), but over 50% of those are "dark Shadow grey metallic"... no thanks.

When nobody else wants them 5 years from now, however, dark shadow grey metalic may be for me.

The Ford GT is supposedly going to have around 500 horse, and Fodr has already sais that they will try to keep the price at about $ 150 K. It is a recreation of the old Ford GT-40 from the '60's racing days. It has nothing to do with the Mustang, I don't think.

Met a guy at a car show this weekend. He said that he knew for a fact that the new Mustang would be offered with a V6, 210 hp (+/-), a 340 hp V8 and only 4 months later would have the 427 HP Cobra version.
Anyone heard similar? He was sure it would be next Summer, 4 mos later for the Cobra.
