We use thermal immaging at work quite often but not that particular brand/style. What are you wanting to do with it and maybe I can tell you if its worth the investment or not?

Renthorin,
Sorry to be completly off topic, but I noticed that you were from Chelsea. I wished I would have known that there was a bored member there a few years ago. I had my old T-Type breakdown not once, but twice going from Dearborn to Chicago in Chelsea in the course of two weeks back in July 01. Ahh... Memories.

Myclone = I plan to use it in the dead of night to look for heat sources in the darkness around me when I am camping.

Just to see if anything is out there before I grab my camcorder and IR spotlight.

Shane - I would have been happy to assist. Isn't Chelsea lovely?

Although Im not familiar with the particular model you are looking at I can tell you a little bit about thermal immaging (FWIW).

We use it at the plant I work at to look for overheated components to catch them before they fail. We have several large switch gear components carrying upwards of 2000 amps, hundreds of motors/gear boxes, pumps, etc that are all scanned with the T immaging system to look for failing components.

Now with the history out of the way ;) , IMO it works very well for that and would prolly work very well for what you want. The only down side that Ive found is you cant make out specific detail. In example I can find an over heated fuse in a bank of ~20 but I cant read the label on it with the T immaging unit. In your case Id say you will be able to easily tell if what your looking at is a human or animal but you may find it hard to tell if the animal is say, a fox or a medium sized dog.

To sum it up. If you are just looking for points of heat to shoot vid or pics of then IMO you would be just fine using what those ppl offer. Just keep in mind Im no expert and have only used the technology within the last year or so at work.

We have Argus 2 Thermal Cameras at my firehouse and you can prettymuch see everything in detail, then again the Argus is about 8 times the price of that but its so cool how it works...

FIREFINDER

the navy uses a system like that on ships to find hotspots. there is no picture just a noise when you get closer to a hot spot. thats not a bad price. but be sure thats what you want before you spend your dough.
