Would it be ok to leave the 160 thermostat in with the stock chip. Or would it be better with something higher like the stock thermo ratting thermostat.

hey

run the 160 stat. dont change it. i put a 160 in mine when i first bought the car havent touched it yet. stock or not keep the 160

brent:cool:

How hard is it to replace it? Looks kinda tricky there.:D

hey

its rather simply. 2 bolts and a gasket. i think havent done it in a while. its kinda tight in there but it very simple to do

There is something in the way like right above the neck, it loops around it. Sorry i'm being lazy just getting info before I start to replace it.:D

its one piece

it one piece that is part of the housing on the thermo.

brent

Yes thats right

That is the bypass pipe, its part of the thermostat housing, remove the 2 bolts, and bingo bango, you're at th thermostat! :D

i don't usually jump on a thread with my own question but its so related. I put a 160 in mine with a stock setup but i didn't have a temp guage untill 6 months later. The temp gets to almost 200 on an 95f day. Just wondering what temps are you guys getting with your 160 stat. My 78 camaro has a 160 and it never gets above 170 on a 105f day its a 400sbc block too. maybe mine 160 is sticking....?

Maybe the radiator has a few plugged cores? My '84 vette has a 160° thermostat, but running it thru city traffic the other day in 92° heat it got to 229°, with the fan running constantly! In cool weather, it only goes to around 165°, so I'm pretty sure the 'stat is okay, but I'm betting only about 1/2 my radiator is flowing!

Another 2 cents--I put a 160° stat in my buick, and on cool days the ECM would go back & forth between closed and open loop! (like, the torque convertor locking & unlocking at any random time SUCKS!) For THAT reason it's getting a 180° stat (if I ever get it fixed)

Right now with the 160 in it for the past 4 years it has been around 180-200 with the A/C allways on. On a HOT it around 210, but on Sunday it went past 225! So that made me buy a new thermostat and going to flush the motor later on durring the week.

The 84/85's use a different set up then the 86/87s....for once ours is easier!

2 bolts a hose clamp, and BAM the thermostat is right there!

The 86/87's you have to take out a housing that holds it into the intake "or something"....but you cannot used the 86/87 housing on the 84/85's!
