Thinking about buying a Dyno...........

I was thinking about what I would love to do for a hobby and I pretty much decided to buy a dyno, but which unit is going to suit me?

Here is what I was thinking.

Buy a used dyno ( heard they never wear out)

Buy a new dyno ( lots more money, but could turn into something like a shop)

Put rollers in foundation of garage (no dyno info, but safe conditions and cheaper)

Dynomite dyno
Mustang dyno
???

Buy the portable one so you can go to the ricer cruise nights and do pulls. It's cheaper and you can make money to pay for it.

Ya, the more I think about a portable unit, it seems I would get more of a return on those hot ricer nights!

a local shop has a Mustang dyno. It also has a 1/4 simulator on it which is accurate to a 1/10th. Pretty cool.

DO NOT buy an emissions type dyno. (One the has 2 rollers per wheel and the car sits between the rollers), rather get the ones that have one wheel that the car sits on. The ones that have 2 rollers per wheel and the wheel sits on the "valley" between rollers are unsafe for power testing as the car tries to walk up the front roller. Ask me how I know <grin>

Make sure the one you buy has a good quality power absorption unit (PAU). Thats the EXPENSIVE part of a dyno. That and the electronics cabinet.

I have a Dynojet and use it a couple times a week, very accurate and an excellent tool for tuning. The main reason I bought it was to keep from driving customers cars up and down the road over 100mph.

That was my initial thoughts on why I should just at least get the rollers for my use.Then everything else started to snowball with just having a real dyno and poss. making a little cash on the side to pay for it.

I am thinking portable tho.

I need as much info as I can so if you have anything else to share it would be very appreciated.

My friend was given a clayton water wheel engine dyno complete with the computer, cabinet with all guages and everything elase you would need by nick arias of arias engine building fame. I guess it was "owed" to him. It is pretty damn awesome. Our problem is finding a good water source and a pump to run water through it. My buddy is an older guy with a lot of connections, must be nice.....

I've seen a couple of emissions dyno's and at least one Mustang dyno go through ebay in the last year, usually at pretty cheap prices. I think the Mustang went for less than $7,000 with wideband O2 and the computer system. The big thing is shipping - you need a semi trailer to go get it, or you pay more for the shipping than you do for the dyno .
