Throttle valve in the valve body

So, I'm assembling the valve body and got to the tv valve. It has a small spring , a floating piece then a bigger spring, another piece that sticks out and the sleeve.
It seems like the small spring doesn't have much tension. That might be suppose to be like that. The floating piece doesn't really "snap" back with the spring pressure. I was thinking maybe a stiffer spring like out of a pen or something.
What does that bottom floating piece do?
I did put a firm spring from the 700 in the line bias, and the line bias spring in the accumulator.
Moving on to drilling some holes in the spacer plate.

No kit. My budget is small. These are stock tv from the AA vb I am using. I got a 700 clutch return spring on the cheap for the line bias and have been reading up on vb plate holes to firm up the shifts. I'm starting small with some David Husek knowledge and will be moving on up to some Jake sizes and ck sizes if I don't like how the shifts turn out.
If this doesn't work out ill move on to the tta vb I acquired. I figure on dropping the pan a "few" times to get it going.

The ck shift kit swaps this spring out to a stiffer one on the tv. The stock one has a lot of slop in it before the tv pin moves.
My thoughts are the shift kits from the builders out there are worth it. Its too hard to get all this little parts without a kit.

I did find at final air testing with vb installed that i snagged the end of one of the springs with the large roll pin. That was fun to fix.

It's been a while so correct me if I'm all wet . The small valve with the small short weak spring behind it is the throttle valve . ATSG calls the small short spring the throttle valve boost spring . This valve & spring is held in place by a roll pin . in front of the throttle valve is the heavier & longer throttle valve spring . then you have the throttle valve plunger that sticks out of the throttle valve plunger bushing . Another roll pin holds the bushing in place . I used a 700 TV plunger spring that I shortened a little bit . I didn't mess with the small TV valve spring . As long as the valve doesn't bind I think it's ok . Some kits do have a stronger spring if you think you need it .

Rich, its on page 10 of the ck book i scanned for you or piston 302 in atsg. I changed spring 346 with one in ck kit

Thanks ill look for it. I was trying to prevent a sticky tv. I was reading the instructions for the transgo kit that 77 cruiser turned me on to. Very clear instructions with pix and such . I guess I need to save up and splurge on a kit or two.

Stove bolt , that is what I got in there as you described. I was just kind of Leary of the dinky spring. I might raid the pen drawer and cut down a clicky pen spring so the valve closes better.

Swap the TAF TV valve, TV long spring and short spring into the AA valve body. You will not have to mess with it again. You can also swap the TV limit, sometimes they get weak. If you dont want to go that route, I have the TV valve and springs in stock.

Is the ta tv valve of the larger .390 or .430 variety? I will get it out and measure.
I measures the aa one I am using and it appears to be the .357 size according to my caliper.
I ended up getting a spring that is a little stiffer than the big aa piece and cut it too 2" as Mr. Diers advised in a thread I searched up. I also got a spring that was stiffer than the small one at the bottom and cut it to length with the dremel cut off. Now the valve moves as I press the tv rod that hangs out the end. I was afraid as the inner spool didn't seem to get back with the low tension of the flimsy spring. Maybe it was suppose to do that. I don't know. Moves good now with no bind.
I'm studying up on valve body accumulator now. Not sure I need a larger one as I am using the large sonnax servo. I want firm not harsh shifts.

The TAF TV valve is the same as a BR TV Valve which is the larger valve. Lonnie makes a 2" TV spring that works well in many applications. Use the TAF VB and dont touch it if it is stock. It should give you the shifts you are looking for.
