I have had this problem on and off. It's like a lifter problem. It comes and goes. I switched to 10-40 royal purple and it hasn't been around as much. In the process of trying to tune and doing some wide open blasts, it has gotten real bad. Two nights ago it got so loud the caspers knock gauge would roll into red just revving motor. I thought something broke. The next morning it starts fine with no ticking and it drives great all day. Today it did fine this morning and starting ticking at lunch and is better now. This is all on a very low mileage rebuild. I have pulled the heads twice for headgaskets. Could I have a bad lifter? They were new gm ones and probably have a few thousand miles on them. Any thoughts? I probably should pull the valve covers and inspect things. Should I check preload, if so, how?
