It was a wonderful cool quiet night. Just me and my 3.8 I had painted up my timing cover black and pretty. I applied a thin coat of Permagasket #2 to the front of my freshly built 3.8 block. I then stuck the timing gasket to the Permagasket, installed my cam button and put another thin coat of #2 on the other side of the timing gasket. I then stuck the timing cover on and tightened the bolts. Wondering what the proper torque setting was I consulted my all knowing TR engine book. The book stated 30Lbs for cover to block and 7Lbs for water pump to cover. So, I did a round at 15Lbs then continued on to 30 Lbs. While doing the 30Lbs tightening I heard a SNAP. Upon looking I realized that the water jacket had split. I took a glance at the cover and noticed a nice long crack all the way down the passenger side of the cover, on the water jacked. I then, remover the cover to check for errors and I saw none. The surface was clean, the sealer was evenly applied. These are the questions I have.
Is 30Lbs the proper torque spec for cover to block?
Are you supposed to use any sealers on the cover?
Or did I just have a cover that was near the end?
and where do you recommend I get a new cover?
Any ideas?
