I have a thrasher 92 chip in the 86 87 ecm. We're having a problem with sputtering on the top end, and we went out to check timing, and its sitting right around 22 degrees. Ive looked around and found that thrasher 92 chips usually have about 18 19 degrees. Now, we tried to losen up that round black thing on the front of the motor, but when we go so far to one direction, the engine just dies. It doesnt really seem to do anything to the timing. Do you think the timing should be adjusted some how? Or do you think the sputtering is due to a fuel issue, and not timing?

probably fuel. do you have an upgraded pump, hotwire, fpr etc.? I'd reset the cam sensor back to stock specs. also do you have a way of monitoring fuel pressure during a run like a fuel pressure gauge by the wiper? that may offer some insight. also could be coil getting flakey on top if its old

What he said ........
Make sure to verify alternator output, grounds, plug gap and cables.

Not yet on any of those, but will soon. How do i reset it to stock specs?
If it runs, you're probably ok with the setting of the cam sensor. It does not control timing. Timing is only controlled with the chip. How did you verify timing? With a scan tool?
