Any tips on taking the factory alternator apart. I unscrewed the four screws but there seems to be a fair amount of resistance when trying to pull the back off. I wanted to polish the case.

make sure youre puling the pulley side of the case out of the windings
the windings stay with the back half of the case, if you try to pull them out with the top half you *will* **** the alternator up.

You may need an impact wrench to remove the pulley from the front. Also be careful, when you split the case the brushes will pop out. There should be holes in the brush housings that you can put a piece of wire or paperclip through to hold the brushes in the retracted position for reassembly. The whole process is very simple...rebuilding alternators is easy.

he will need an impact to do it

but you dont need to remove the pulley to take the case apart.
