I have a mostly stock GN and when I bought it I was told it had a 2800 stall converter. I'm wondering if that is too much for a stocker. It seems to me that a lower stall would build more boost at a lower rpm. Even with street tires I'm at 2500 rpm or better to build a little boost off the line. A quick check this morning with the catalytic converter installed I was at 2000 rpm just below 0 boost. With tires and a straight pipe I've stalled to 3000 rpm (on Direct Scan) just to get 5-6 # boost. Worked good e.t.-wise but it seems like I'm wasting a lot of rpm not to mention the strain on the motor.

So do I need to dump this turd for a D5, I hear they're 2050? Would an orange stripe at 2250 be ok? The tranny shifts fine. I don't have plans outside of solid 12's. Seems like the closer I get to stock the faster the car goes.

We use the D-5 high stall which is about 2400 to 2600 stall depending on the car set up. We have had very good results from using that set up with stock engines. It will allow you to build boost, but without totally sacrificing good street manners. That is what I can tell you from our considerable experience.

what type of converter and diameter is it?the d5 will work well as will what you have if it was designed properly from the beginning.a modified d5 should be considered mandatory.for maximum performance with a stock engine a converter thatll let you build 5 plus pounds at 2900 rpms will yield the best 1/4 mile times

As far as exactly what converter it is I haven't a clue. Looks like guys with similar converters are getting a variety of different results. Maybe the best thing to do is get a known quantity and go from there. Thanks for all the input.
