I have the same thing in my right knee about a 1/4 inch flap for the past 2 years, So i just purchase a real good knee brace and it's not bad now but i can't squat fully and i just watch how i turn. Hope it turns out good for ya.

I had the same thing a few years ago , my knee would be fine most of the time , every so often the little flap that was tore would come out and get caught and bind under the knee cap , i could not straightnen my knee out , it would eventually get back in place , every thing was fine till next time , started happening more often , so heck with it , had arthoscopic surgery , put me out , took the surgeon 15 minutes , was back to work in two days never had a problem again , wasnt cheap but its fixed

I have a torn labrum in my shoulder that Ive had for years. Over the past 6 months or so, its gotten MUCH worse. Im in constant pain and my right arm is pretty much useless at this point. To top it all off, I received 4 steroid injections from that place pumping out the fungal meningitis stuff. Thankfully the drug they used on me hasnt had any reported incidents but it was recalled.

Anyway, Im going in for surgery Tuesday. Everyone says the recovery really sucks but it cant be worse than what Im dealing with now. I was upstairs trying to put a computer together and even using a screwdriver is sheer agony.

I feel for you.. if it manageble, go ahead and get it fixed before you end up like me. My right arm has been worthless for several months and probably will be for another 4-6 weeks after surgery.

There are many different types of meniscal tears but one of the most common is a "bucket" handle type tear, which is easily fixed arthroscopically. Unfortunately, the longer you wait to get it fixed, depending upon other factors (like activity level, if you are overweight, have other ortho problems like flat feet, hip problems, etc..) the worse things will get.

The risk of developing osteo-arthritis and other problems like a chunk breaking off and floating around in the joint (a dessicans) also becomes a factor if you don't get it fixed, with eventual arthroplasty possibly being required (knee replacement). You can use a good quality knee brace to help stabilize the knee in the short term, but then the muscles around the knee that provide stabilization without the brace tend to become weaker and introduce a host of other problems down the road, requiring the use of the brace all of the time, additional pains up and down the kinetic chain (feet, hips, back, etc..)

Plenty of folks get by for some time with minor tears, especially if they exercise and do knee strengthening work, etc.. to keep the knees normal stabilization mechanisms in check, but more serious tears will require medical intervention. This is due to the nature of fibrocartilage which has no, or very few blood vessels, lymphatic channels or nerve tissue to help it heal as other tissues in the body do so things heal very slowly, or sometimes not at all depending upon the tear type, and other factors.

Anyway, good luck with it - but if you can get it fixed please do so as the risk of arthritis and other related issues gets worse over time.
