The 4 killed in Alabama were maybe 5 miles from me. I got home last night from a race around 2am and watched the funnel cloud go right behind my house around 4am. The winds never got bad here but at least 10 houses within .5 mile of me were wiped out. It took a clear path of trees and houses with it. Lots of roofs and trees laying everywhere where they were ripped away. Just up the street maybe .5 mile is a roof from a house that we have no idea where it came from. It looks just like you set the roof off onto the ground.
It's amazing how accurate the weather radars are. I knew it was right on top of my area when the power went out. I ran outside and could clearly see the funnel cloud when the lightning would flash. It went just north of me by 1/2 mile.

Wow that must have been intense. I normally enjoy watching big storms come through my area but not quite that big!

Blew through my area (frankfort KY) last night around 1am. I didn't hear anything about a touchdown but the winds and rain and lightning were something else. Sounded like the end of the world. All is well- except for a few downed power lines, traffic signals, and trees.
The path that storm took was weird. I'm downtown Nashville in a high rise, the view was awesome, but I knew that some parts of town were taking a beating from the direction the bursts of light came from. I've seen worse storms down here, last nights was about a 6.
I couldn't help but to stay on my balcony and listen to The Cult's "rain". I actually enjoyed the show, I feel bad for the fatalities though.

We are still here. I live in Jackson, TN which should be renamed the Tornado Magnet. We were hit on the south side of the city in 1999, the middle/downtown area in 2004, and now the north end of the city in 2008. All F4 tornados. Union University was devastated - estimated $40million in damages there alone. Cars at an intersection were thrown 100 yards with people in them. You can't apprectiate the damage these things can do unless you see it with your own eyes - pictures don't do it justice.

Those tornados dont give you too much warning. At least down here when a hurricane comes we have days instead of minutes to leave. Unless you live in New ORleans and your too stupid to know what "below sea level" means.

Thanks. We had about 15 minutes warning that it was coming our way. We had no idea it had touched down before our power went out. Had I known it was on the ground we would have definately been in our shelter. The news said it was definate circulation but no reports of touchdown then boom, power goes out. I went outside and watched to mainly see how much wind we were getting which was minimal, very calm. I then spotted the funnel cloud and watched it as it moved from the west of me to the north of me. It seemed much further away then it actually was. Houses within .5 mile to the west and north were wiped out yet I had very little wind. Going by what I saw I assumed it had never touched down, not knowing just 5 miles away it had already killed a family of 3, husband, wife and son. I now know that no matter how calm it seems, I'll be in the shelter when the radar indicates it's that close.
