that's gonna happen everywhere. What the hell........they can take your real estate, why not be able to steal your car, too. Makes these weeny politicians look like they're doing something. The car culture is looked down on.

Maybe they should take some of that real estate and money the steal and build a few 24hr drag strips. oh! I'm sorry thatsthe smart thing to do, my bad....

thats why i dont street race in california anymore, i dont want my GN to end up like that Z28..

Me I have never street raced in my life, and i don't plan on it. Not just the stupid factor, but i have always had rare cars that i didn't want to see taken away from me. (ex. Volvo 242ti flathood, 1962 chevy pickup, :) '96 nissan 240sx... , and the granny).

To me that seems somewhat ridiculous.
But I'm sure that the version of "street racing" I've been involved in is not what normally goes on, or what the politicians have grown accustomed to seeing.

Hollywood comes out with "The Fast and The Furious" and then expect impressionable kids not to street race!!

Street racing has been going on since cars were built, it will never be stopped.

Unfortunately, kids watch a movie and think they are invensible! The rest of us have to be punished for their STUPIDITY!!!

I think we as Americans have give to much power to our government. We are now told what to do and how to do it. I don't think people stand up in what they believe anymore like in the past. Many politicians have done worst things than drag racing. It pisses me off as an American that I cannot enjoy my car anymore. I'm not saying that drag racing on the street is right but what I'm saying is that we are now limited by laws and government how it run our lives. What will be next??

Come to Florida and see if it isn't stopped. You'd be hard pressed to find a street race here. They just passed the same kind of law here, and before long, all states will have the same law. It's like your a drunk driver, only worse, in the eyes of politicians. Like I said, they don't care about the car culture or people who are into cars. I'll bet ya they really got off crushing that guy's car.

They crushed a car that they confiscated from a street racer? (video won't load so I can't watch it)

That's just wrong...

BUT... to RRT's drunk driving point... what's the bigger problem, drunk driving or street racing? Which activity kills more people? Which is the bigger threat to public safety?

Obviously, drunk driving... so I think it would be an excellent idea if every state cloned that law to apply to drunk drivers! If you are caught street racing they can crush your car so why not if you are caught DUI?

I'm thinking that would be a mighty effective deterrent.

Lots of states have severe punishments for street racing. Virginia has had a law on the books for years that allows the state to seize vehicle used in street racing. You don't hear about it much because it probably never happens, but it could. I would hate to be the guy that pisses off the wrong Commonwealth Attorney after being caught street racing.

I agree totally but since the Govt. gets so much tax rev. off alcohol they would never consider it.

Maybe some Govt. regulated drag strips are in order here.

They should also crush the cars of :
Elderly people who are too old to be on the road!
Mexicans that dont have a license/insurance!
People who get caught in a road rage incident!
Truck drivers who fall asleep at the wheel!
Tourists that cant keep their eyes on the road!
People caught talking on cell phones!
People who drive Fords! (DWIT) Driving With Impaired Taste  :D

But they're not going to crush those people's cars, they're going to crush the cars of those who street race. Yes, we're equal in the eyes of the law, to drunk drivers. I think the law just signed into law here in Florida, get's you arrested, just like a drunk driver, for a speed contest. You could just run from a punch with somebody up to 60 or 70 and find yourself in jail, holding a $1000 ticket, your car impounded, and your license suspended. Goosin the gas is fun and all, but the punishment is totally out of kilter. You're kidding yourself if you think some cops going to give you break. They don't care how much trouble they cause working people. (do you know why I stopped you? ) That's why I say, they have nothing but disdain for the car guys and our car culture.

I think people talking on cell phones not paying attention kill far more people than any of the above, its just hard to prove cause no one will admit to talking on their cell when they caused an accident...or they are dead and their cell phone went flying out the window...
I say take the cell phone talkers cars and crush them...thats one way to clear traffic and not have to waste $$ on expanding the roads :D

I think police cruisers should have roof-mounted gun turrets that can be used to obliterate anyone seen talking on their cell phones while driving. I bet the problem would be solved almost immediately.

I don't really see what the difference is between confiscating the car and crushing it is. The impact on the alleged street-racer is the same. Crushing it is just a waste of money. If you confiscate it you can auction it off. Those folks are just going for the shock value. Crushing a ratted-out IROC doesn't do it for me. Squash something nice and I'll take you seriously.

The video finally loaded for me.....was it just me or was that news lady in the studio wearing a satin lace top for the news?
Kind of a red-neck style crusher they used too

It's a little confusing to me because the clip of illiegal racing that was shown on the video looked like "organized" drag racing. Maybe that is what they are really trying to crack down on?

It's about any kind of speed contest. From a light, on a hiway, anywhere. Coming to a state near you and soon, your state.

Here in CT we have had two highway “street races” end in tragedy. One…. two teenagers ran a 350Z off of I-91 into trees when they lost control trying to pass, both were dismembered and killed. What the hell is 17 and 19 year old doing in a 350Z? And were the hell were the parents? – These are questions I believe need to be answered.

The other, two jackasses moving well over 90-mph were weaving/racing through highway traffic, one of them slammed into the back of a small SUV killing a 50-ish year old woman (passenger) and mangling her husband (driver) on their way to vacation. Of course the car(s) not involved in the actual accident continued on, as did the other car in the 350Z incident.

The price for a good “street race”: Two teens who never got to live and a family without a wife and mother.

In my mind I feel this is enough said that “street racing” is the absolute stupidest thing you could do and is getting out of control. Don’t get me wrong I did do it, but not anymore, I couldn’t live with myself if I hurt/killed someone or hurt my family. We in the “car community” need to recognize this and focus on the perpetrators not the politicians. Image is everything, so to get rid of the politicians we need to get rid of the street racing. Politicians are bags of hot air, we need to just suck it out of them.

I’m sure you guys are going to tear me up on this.

It's always been illegal to street race. You used to be ticketed for "participating in a contest of speed" on the streets. If you caused manslaughter as a result, that was/is also punishable by law. The difference between then and now is like someone here said: "shock value". It is posturing by politicians to secure their place in their community of being "for the people". It's all based around a tough guy stance when politicians are notorious for talking in circles and sidestepping issues that are truly important. What is truly important? How about truancy - teacher salary reform - tax evasion - balancing a budget - government squandering of funds - streamlining and combining gov't services - and so on. Plenty of solid issues that need help worse than giving the police a heavier hand than they have already. You can now be arrested for "accellerating".
