Here in CT we have had two highway “street races” end in tragedy. One…. two teenagers ran a 350Z off of I-91 into trees when they lost control trying to pass, both were dismembered and killed. What the hell is 17 and 19 year old doing in a 350Z? And were the hell were the parents? – These are questions I believe need to be answered.

The other, two jackasses moving well over 90-mph were weaving/racing through highway traffic, one of them slammed into the back of a small SUV killing a 50-ish year old woman (passenger) and mangling her husband (driver) on their way to vacation. Of course the car(s) not involved in the actual accident continued on, as did the other car in the 350Z incident.

The price for a good “street race”: Two teens who never got to live and a family without a wife and mother.

In my mind I feel this is enough said that “street racing” is the absolute stupidest thing you could do and is getting out of control. Don’t get me wrong I did do it, but not anymore, I couldn’t live with myself if I hurt/killed someone or hurt my family. We in the “car community” need to recognize this and focus on the perpetrators not the politicians. Image is everything, so to get rid of the politicians we need to get rid of the street racing. Politicians are bags of hot air, we need to just suck it out of them.

I’m sure you guys are going to tear me up on this.

Wow, a couple of people died street racing.....and itsthe dumbest thing a person could do? 40,000 people a year die in car accidents period. The examples you cite, and street racing fatalaties in general are so statistically insignificant, if you made a pie chart with vehicle deaths and causes you would need a compass capable of increments down to the nanometer.

Maybe driving in general is the stupidest thing you could do.Or maybe just living a sedentary lifestyle since heart disease is the leading killer inthe USA. Lets start outlawing everything.

I have lost hope... we allready enough laws onthebooks to criminalize any breathing human and probably some dead ones. Laws are seldom repealed... the news has a field day if that were to happen and one guy gets hurt because of it. Politician is then out of a job.

The more laws the better!

Under the guise of "safety" we will soon no longer have any freedoms whatsoever

Obviously you have never had to inform surviving family members of such statistically insignificant events.

11 years ago I had a wreck on the street (city streets) at over 120mph.

I was street racing when a front tire blew, and I lost control of the car. Was lucky to walk away.

Street racing is STUPID. You endanger the lives of innocent people and no matter how you spin it......thats not your right.

I dont care if street racing is only responsible for one fatality a year.....thats one too many.

at some point we must decide if the govt has the right to protect the innocent at the expense of the guilty....and IMO, not only does the govt have that right.....they have that DUTY.

take it to the track or lose your car. its just that simple.

in this country we have LAWS that are designed to protect people. follow them, or suffer the conciquences.

VinsGN and TTAfreakII,

I don't think anyone is saying that only a few deaths are Ok. It's the fact that DWI and other crimes are a bigger problem and the consequences are not on scale with the crime. I have street raced and problably will in the future. Do I race in rush hour traffic or in residential area with 15 mph speed limit. NO, I (we) race on a quite backroad with no traffic. Is that the same as a Drunk driving on the wrong side of the highway or street that has traffic all around him? I say NO. As stated earlier, if I am racing and end up killing someone, there's laws already on the books that will punish me. Do we need more? NO
I doubt either one of you have ever exceeded the speed limit, I hate to think that you would lose your car because of that. You know SPEED kills and I am sure there is a incident were speeding killed someone. Where does it stop?

You state: "in this country we have LAWS that are designed to protect people. follow them, or suffer the conciquences."

We also have freedoms to complain and correct those laws that not just, there has to be a balance.

I'd agree a million percent IF we apply the same punishment to a far more serious problem... drunk driving.

Why are the politicians so big and brave to apply draconian laws to, as Pablo correctly pointed out, a statistically non-existent problem yet strangely silent on a statistically VERY significant problem... drunk driving? If public safety were really the issue, DUI would be treated far more harshly than street racing. But public safety is not the issue... it never is.

Actually I have several times, I was a Marine Recruiter and had the awful chore more then once. Do we stop living or live in bubble? NO, we put things into prespective and move forward and not over react.

Blob and Wilins,

I agree with your statements as well. However, I dont think the fact that DUI laws arent harsh enough is a legitimate reason to champion an equally dangerous and illegal act.

rather than call for the government to ease up on street racers, I think maybe we should all call for the government to crack down on DUIs.

Ive always said DUI first offese.......3 years jail time with no probation and no questions asked.

but we all know its wayyyyyyyyyyy more about revenue for then govt than it is about protecting the public.

thats just a sad fact.

I miss the good old days when you could line them up, have a little fun on the weekends and just worry about a ticket. Hell most of the time the cops where cool enough to just warn you anyway. Now some retard driving his hot pink new $20 to $30 grand super jap car doesn’t know when to let off the gas and feels like he needs to get by you long after the race is done. So he kills someone and YOU end up going to jail to, so now your liable for his actions? All I can say is all of this kind of stuff is a joke and it is sad to see. If I am speeding give me a ticket but crush my car? What is happening to America anyway..... Oh ya and I will be standing by the bridge so you can jump to, or should anyone use that story anymore.
