I been gathering info on the tps setting and find that .042-44 at idle and 4.5-.9 at wot if i remeber correctly. i went to check my tps and could not get a reading at idle (didnt try at wot) is there a different method of checking? I stuck the positive lead of my multimeter in the center wire slot on the harness and pushed in in all tghe way i think i didnt want to cut the wire so i didnt force it in any further. I loosened the screws a touch and tapped it gently to see if it was installed icorectly and still nothing. Now my Service engine light comes on at idle and goes off after i drive. No Tach, so im guessing the light goes off at around 1000-1200 rpms and comes on if i slow down to a stop. is my tps bad or can i move it around some more and try to get a reading. The car actually seems to be running better minus the light coming on, idles smoother runs smoother just the light comes on at lower rpms.

It sounds like you didn't get a very good connection.

Before I had my ScanMaster I used to set my TPS with a volt meter, and some spare Pins. (small)

I took the one pin, and stuck it thru the (middle) wire after that I put an allegator clip on it, and then connected the other end of the allegator clip to my volt meter probe. After that is connected I turned on the volt meter, and poked around with the negative lead till I got a reading (just find a good ground). (during the time you are trying to get the reading make sure the ign is "ON")

When you have a good steady reading just loosen up the TPS sensor, and tap it into the .42 position....Tighten up the screws, and then lay the VoltMeter on the window while you climb in the car, and put the gas pedal to the floor (With the car off, and Ign "ON")

Try the pin method...this way you don't have to mess up the weather pack connectior, and you only make a small pinhole in the wire that you can cover up with some elec tape, or loom.

pins? like sewing kinda pins, push pins or special pins like the roll pin sorry for my confusion

Yea....sewing pins...something small, sharp and metal....anything that you can push in easily, and that is conductive.

Instead of pushing through the wire, push the pins down between the wire and the rubber weatherpack gasket down into the connector...Then use alligator clips to connect the pins to the probes of the voltmeter...

If you stick the pin through the wire insulation and don't reseal it properly, the wire will corrode from moisture getting in and you will create more resistance in the wire and create a troubleshooting nightmare...

Check the idle specs...should be about .42v...You can also set the WOT setting by holding the throttle open while under the hood...THEN do as Herb suggested and check to see what WOT setting you are at while pushing on the pedal while sitting in the car...If there is a discrepancy between the two, then go back under the hood and reset it and add or subtract the difference between where you had it set when under the hood and what it was actually by pressing on the pedal...By doing it all under the hood, you can check idle and WOT in like 2 min, tops...

thanks guys im gonna give it a shot in the morning thanks for the tips. Just incase if i cant get the volts in range can i loosen or tighten the stop screw or will that mess up everything

Main thing is get the idle voltage set to about .42v...On the WOT volts, check to see that you are getting at least 4.2v, ideally get it to about 4.5v if possible...

If you're talking about the "throttle stop screw", which is actually used only when setting the IAC, if you adjust it, you will throw your TPS setting out of whack...Leave it be for now, if you haven't already touched it...If you don't have any type of scantool to tell you IAC setting and engine rpms, then you can't really set the IAC properly and will screw up idle quality and driveability...

Main thing right now is to check and see what your TPS is set at...

Sounds like when you tapped on the TPS and moved it, it went out of adjustment...Just get the idle set to .42v and check your WOT voltage...

Let us know what you find out...

when i first got the car i tightened the screw a turn or 2 doh! before i really new what it did. when i checked the tps this week before adj. idle was like 1. somthing. i had to use a piece of .020 steel lockwire from work to get a reading and now the idle is .43 and wot is about 4.6 the light on dash is off but it still seems a little rough and the TPS is "leaning" toward the TB intake. I was thinkin about setting the TPS back straight up and down and movin the screw to see if i can get the range. since im a gomer and ^!@%#* with the screw in the first place and dont have a scan tool, i wanna get it back to pre-jason condition ya know. should i or not.

If you can remember how far you turned the screw in, just back it off about the same amount and reset the TPS again...When you're done, then disconnect the orange ecm power wire by the battery to reset the ecm and reconnect it and take it for a drive and see how it runs...

Let us know what you find out...

aint messed with the screw yet but i looked in the engine bay and seen the orange connector but its not hooked up to anything. I cant see anyplace for it to hook up to. could it be a harness for a scan tool or somthing . its on the pass. side wheel well just sittin there.

are you trying to unhook power to the ecm, if so it will be a orange wire with a connection where it pulls apart , it will be hooked to the batt. The wire you are talking about , dont know, is it to your o2 sensor. maybe a died wire or something. you need to move up my way so we can get that car running good.

the connector is 3 prong orange. There is no where to connect it to i checked today unless it plugs in somwhere i cantsee without removing somthing. car is runnin great crazy as stock tryin to slowly get it to friggin awesome slowly but surely. i ve started printing stufff off gnttype and make a manual. I just wish there was a haynes type manual for this car i like the the pics showing me what the books talkin about. TPS is set at .42 idle and 4.6 WOT (close as I could get) By the way I notced a tube today on the heater core (i think) there a liitle circle on pass side with a ruber pipe bent 90 connected to core. inside the circle looks like a motor or somthing what is that is anybody knows
