I can't find any info on how to trouble-shoot this system. I know it has something to do with the speed sensors at the wheels and tranny...
Any Ideas?
Where can I get a "good" factory-type service manual??

I have the '99 W-platform manuals. They won't help you, I don't think. The answer to any indicator light being set is to hook up a scan tool and pull the codes. The light is on because it's failed the self-diagnostics. The only way to reset it is with a scan tool (after fixing the problem) or after 100 ignition cycles without a problem being detected. Unhooking the battery and/or unplugging the EBCM/EBTCM won't clear it.

No ABS light, just "traction control OFF" after about the first tenth mile of driving each time.
I see the "traction control unit" up front near the "load leveling compressor", but can't see any obvious problems.

The Trac Control Off light will come on and stay on to indicate that there's a problem. If it's shutting off, that's good - I think. Are you sure it's not just because you have the Trac Control shut off?

The manual says that if the TRAC OFF light stays on after the key-on bulb check, then you follow the test procedure for "Traction Control Indicator Always On". First step is to run the Diagnostic System Check (you need a scan tool for that). Second is the check for Body Control Module DTCs (again, scan tool required). If you get a B2597 DTC from the Body Control Module, you're supposed to look it up in the Body Control Module DTC table. When I did that, the DTC table went from 2559 to 2602. Bastages. If you don't get an error from the Body Control Module, the next step is to go into WOW mode to manually operate the instrument panel lights. If that works, then you replace the EBCM/EBTCM (the ABS/Traction Control module).

I guess the bottom line is that you have to pull the codes. I ordered an Equus 3100 scan tool (this thread reminded me to do that). I have 2 OBD-II cars, so it was worth the investment. It only pulls stored codes, so you can't to run any of the diagnostics. However, if a diagnostic code is stored (generic or manufacturer-specific), it will pull it. Might be a good investment for you, too. JC Whitney has them for $169.99, but there are more than a couple of places on the 'Net selling them for $134.99.

Good luck,

I have access to an "Auto-X-Ray" OBD-I scanner and like how it reads codes and "real time OP-Data" on my older cars. Does anyone have or have opinions about the new OBD-II version as seen in JC Whittney. Worth the $300???

I have only one OBD-II car so far, but I know it's only time before I'll have to get another one, maybe a Regal GS. I guess I should start preparing to work on them.

I love the power of this car, already imbarrassing a nearly new Maxima, ImpalaSS(new),Alero, Civic SI, F150 5-spd,Volvo740 and anyone who thought it was an easy kill. Losing only to a Mustang GT(not a decisive defeat tho)and a draw with a 4-door GTP.

I know there's some issues with tuning and detenation with my car hence I feed it Sunoco 94, cause some days it's an ANIMAL and others it's just a grocery getter. I like the factory "mandrel-bent exhaust, but think the muffler lacks and the pipe diameter is a little small, maybe 2 1/4"?..
