How do I find out if I get points on my license for a traffic violation I received recently? I checked with my insurance and there's nothing there.

The ticket was in Ocean City, Maryland... but I live in Delaware. The officer at the scene said he wasn't sure if the points will transfer to DE. I tried calling the MD disctrict court but after 20 minutes on hold still could not get through to anyone :(

Thanks,
-Banning.

From what I understand points dont transfer within states - I got a ticket in NJ 7 years ago just paid it and I wasnt suspended in NJ or NY So I dont know

PNYKLR you must have got lucky!

i know that ny points tranfer to nj! bastards!

Same with PA to Jersey. Heck, one of the guys I know went down to Mardi Gras and got a ticket for doing 90 in a 50 in Mississippi and those points transfered back to Jersey.
The unfortunate thing is that now that most states have computer automated dmv systems, moving violations can and will transfer points.

As soon as I saw the topic I KNEW where it was.... so what they get ya for in OC?? Just curious? Trooper or local? I hate to say but chances are, it'll transfer...

I was ACCUSED of participating in a "speed contest".

$270 fine, plus any points.

Honestly, I was not trying to race the other guy (a fellow TR owner who is on this board :D ). We were side to side at a light, and he was talking to someone else in the other lane. The light turned green and I left... low enough TPS that there was no recall on the scanmaster. Once I left the light he left, BUT spun his tires in the process. If I exceeded the speed limit, I don't think it was by any more than 10mph (45 in a 35?). I was not ticketed for speeding, just "speed contest".

I have a clean driving record, with only one ticket ever... and that was almost 7 years ago!

Wrong. Points do transfer between states that have what's called a "reciprocation agreement". You'll need to check with your state DMV (Secretary of State here in Michigan) to see if the points transfer. Don't trust the people at the court, you'll get a dozen different answers since most of the clerks there don't deal with these situations. They simply collect the fines and input the relevant info into their computer database. The experts are the people in your license and vehicle registration offices that actually regulate and keep record of your driving history.

Let me get this straight. You asked your INSURANCE COMPANY if you had points?
My insurance company (State Farm) must not check your record unless you give them reason, OR they don't mind a few points here and there. :D My rates have never gone up. Don't ever ask them to check your record!!!!

They are all swindling dirtbags and I'm battling them right now on the wife's accident. Problem is, nobody else will give me that fantastoc rates, so I stay. ;)

Just get a good lawyer. It's going to cost either way but usually a good lawyer will keep you from going to driving school. In NC we have "prayer for judgements" for most driving offenses but DWI/DUI. If you do get a PFJ and you do get another ticket within 3 yrs then both tickets will apply.

P.S. Get a good lawyer:D

1) Thanks for the replies guys.

2) No I did NOT ask my insurance company... I just checked all my policy info via their Web site to see if there were any changes.

Thanks again.

Banning,
I got a ticket in VA last year 2 miles from the TN line heading to Bristol, I paid it. I had my record checked and I was sure it would be there but it wasnt???? I would think the points would transfer but not positive. You can pay it and take your chances or wait for court, postpone it about 3 times and hope the "summer" cop cant get away from his real job to attend. That scenario worked for two other guy I know. I dont think the other board member will be as lucky.......

Just FYI most insurance companies WILL NOT chack your driving record if they dont have a reason to..... BUT if you have an accident be prepared... they might..

As for People with State Farm... get ready cause they are running everyones license, changing their underwriting, and so on... State Farm is also not taking new Policyholders, they lost 8 billion over the past 2 years and their policyholders are gonna pay for it dearly.... GEICO has been getting floooooded withg calls from irate state farm customers getting dropped or jacked sooo high. Be careful!

Banning... I'll check at work tomorrow if it will show up..

I was coming back from Texas 2 summers ago with a friend of mine. He got pulled over in Virginia for speeding and the points transfered to NJ. I wonder why yours didnt transfer to Maryland

I too am hoping it was just a summer cop with a few post ponements hopfully scheduled around January The OTHER board member is hoping to get lucky ;).I too had a ticket in VA & it did not transfer to MD. that was 2 years ago.Hopfully my changing luck can keep in it's direction,Thank's for the positive out look Bill ;)

I wouldn't just 'pay it'.

If it's a racing ticket, I wouldn't just pay it. I'm sure it's more than just 2 points that are attached with that. Last time I remember, "exhibition of speed" was 5 points and up to $500. I'm not a cop, nor an authority... just what I remember. I would think about talking to a lawyer and getting this on PBJ (probation before judgement in MD) or put on what's called a STET docket (similar) which will keep it 'away' for a year I believe so long as you keep your nose clean. It's really a simple transaction of asking the states attorney to accept that. Good driving record... mitigating circumstances... out of state driver. But I wouldn't just 'pay it' and let those points show on your record... insurance company gets wind that you were convicted of racing and that's all she wrote.

Guys, I'm not sure if you're skipping over my earlier post or not but some states transfer and some don't. It is based solely on whether they have "RECIPROCATION AGREEMENTS". I had a chart from long ago that showed which states honored tickets and/or points from other states. I know for a fact the Great Lakes states have this agreement. I stopped a gal last week and she had a Florida ticket on her Michigan record worth 2 points. It depends on the state in which you reside and the state in which you were ticketed.

Again, to be 100% sure check with your state DMV. They're the ones who accept/reject the abstracted record to your driving history. Not the courts, not the police and not insurance companies. The ticketing state cannot enter it on your history. It's the responsibility of the state issuing the driver's license to record all ticket or point activity.

Some states will actuallly issue a valid driver's license even though that person may be suspended/denied/revoked in another state. That gives the person legal ability to drive in the new issuing state and possibly other 48 states, but don't get caught in the state in which you're suspended.
Hope this clarifies things.

Just FYI....

I checked our system at work today ( I work at GEICO) and MD points and violations do show up on DE licenses, and vice versa... Sorry dude!

Thanks for all the replies guys. I'll check with the DE DMV as soon as I get back in town.
