Do you have to completely remove the console to route the new cable and attach it to the shifter bracket?

Looks like you do, just want to make sure there's not an easier way. :)

Any help in how it's done would be appreciated.

Mine broke in second gear 30 miles from home.

Did 4200 rpm for 3 miles on the highway.

Now I know how the ricers feel when I get behind them on the surface roads. :D

I suppose it could be done with the console in but it would be ALOT easier with it out. Console comes out so easy, I'd just pull it.

You should have set the e-brake and got underneath and moved the linkage to OD by hand. :)

You have to take the console out. Not that bad of a job. 2 screws in the ash tray, a couple more under the trim plate, and a couple more in the storage area. NAPA has the cables for about half as much as the dealer.

I have a new GM cable still sealed in its bag if you're looking for a GM part. Email me if you're interested.

Thanks guys. Bought the part years ago from a Kirbans order I think. :)

Finally get to use it, unfortunately.

At the time I didn't know for sure it was the cable other than the funky shifter feel and it didn't do anything. :D

Cable was jammed in there broke up top.

Couldn't move the shift lever at all down below until I unhooked the cable from the lever with the cotter pin out. First time I really looked into how that all works. Tranny has never been out of the car.

Then again I didn't know which way OD was either since I didn't know how the cable was routed up top.

Car rolls pretty good with the Maxeffort chip idle. I prolly woulda run over myself if I tried to find another gear. I took the long slow way home. ;)

Got off the highway RTE 9 in Newington near The Pike and cruised down RTE 5/15 at 40mph which was about 3K rpms and then the oil cooled down and the water did too back to within 10 degrees of normal. 4K heats everything up real good! Saw some larger than usual numbers on the Ultralights. Not too bad though.

Just changed the oil to go racing too which is good. Guess I'll change it again when I get back from racing should be well worn by then.

Clogged up main roads are good for something. :D

PS: Reason I didn't want to take the console out was all my switch plate wiring and others go through there, 2 gauge pod., EGT wires, Translator Plus box, and my DPS digital pressure switch wiring. Big nightmare in there. :(

I had similar reasons for not wanting to take my console out either, but you gotta do what you gotta do.

By the way, you can operate the trans lever by rotating the collar on the steering column. My cable came loose couple of months ago (thought it broke, hence the extra GM cable I have laying around). Just grab the collar. Rotate clockwise to move from P to R to N.....and counterclockwise to put it back in park.

Got the cable in yesterday. :)

You really do have to pull the console out and should move the shifter mounting back by pulling the four screws out holding it to route the new cable in and pull the old one out.

Hard to route the new cable through the hole in the floor with anything in the way too.

Moving all the stuff made it easy.

Hope it lasts another 15 years. :D
