We are bout to install a shift kit in my 70000 mile stock tranny , Its never been open other than previous owner changing fluid . My question is what is the best fluid I can put back in it . Thanks in advance for the info Keith

Before you install that kit, id like to recommend a couple calls. One to ck performance and the second to David Husek. The 2004r is a trans that has many different vb/gov configurations and a generic kit might not give you the results you want.

As to the original question, if you can swing the cost. I put tractor fluid in mine. Also might look at a bottom feed filter. If you do the 700 bottom feed, be sure to wrap that 4th gear switch in the vb so you don't ground it with the metal filter.

Back in the late '80's I put a B&M shift kit in my GN. I first installed the heavy duty/ towing parts (no valve body parts) and took out check balls and it shifted softer than stock. I immediately installed the street/ strip parts (still no valve body parts) which raised the line pressure and it shifted the same as stock, maybe a little stiffer.
A couple years later, after receiving the latest ATR catalog, I removed all the B&M parts and started over with a new valve body separator plate and installed the one from ATR (an Art Carr Turbo Buick Specific with valve body spool valves and springs) that shifted nice and firm under light throttle and very stiff when really into it.
I'm still running this and still love it.

As mentioned, I think I would make sure it is a Turbo Buick specific shift kit.

The kit I have is from TCI transmission . It is for the 200R4 thats in our Buicks . It has a plate that has a hole drilled out a little bigger that goes between the valve body and a couple of springs with it , I also was ask from my trans guy to get a .500 boost valve to also install . I'm not a trans man at all but I know the guy has built some trans for some other GN owners here local and he owns one himself . Thanks guys for all the feed back , KEITH

It's good to work with someone who has first hand experience. I purchased the B&M kit blindly from Summit Racing and had no clue at the time the these cars are so far from the norm.
It sounds like you have a good handle on it.

I think so , I know alot of folks he has done work for and they are very pleased with what he has done . I do understand I have put alot more HP in front of this stock unit so I do understand It will probably have a complete rebuild in the future . It will be getting a converter at that point also . I'm just doing now what my wallet lets me :( Thanks for all the help , Keith
