In a previous threa i started about issues i had been having, trans brake got brought up. As if i put it in first it almost acts like park. It he car was barely rolling, putting it in 1st would stop the car like in park. Someone said thats the trans brake. Is this correct? Anyone have one and could give me some insight?

Sounds like someone installed a manual t-brake.

if it holds like its in park it may have a stageright transbrake

works in low 1 only by manually shifting it , be sure car isnt rolling before engaging low 1, and releases by moving gear selector out of 1st position

it works by engaging low 1 against reverse and the car shouldnt move while on the brake allowing you to build boost much higher than you might be able to on just the foot brakes
theres a couple parts to change inside the trans (manual selector and low valve), a couple holes drilled in seperator plate and one ball needs to left out

i liked the manual brake at the track and put them in both of my gns with 2004rs, doesnt hurt having it there , not much need for it though except at the track . I had years of passes (several hundred) all off the brake on my 86 when that had a 2004r

Thanks for the info. I guess only way to know would be to drop the pan? But it sounds like thisnos what it has. Is stageright the only brand trans brake like this? Just wanting to confirm what i have.

you wouldnt tell anything dropping the pan

if it holds first gear and will build rpm it has a brake

and there really is only the stageright when it comes to mechanical brakes for the 2004r , CK has one that doesnt require the modified low valve but works the same
there is an EA brake for the 2004r but that uses a solenoid and requires pushing and holding a button to engage the brake in low gear

heres a look at the stageright manual selector valve and the low/over run valve (ck version just uses a check ball in the low/over run spring)

Put it in first, car should not move, build a bit of boost, car should not move but don't sit there for too long, bump the shifter into second and car should launch, it will take off in first gear, it will then shift into second gear when it's time but you have to shift from second to drive so that it shifts into third gear otherwise it will stay in second and you'll bounce off the rev limiter. I have the same brake, I would suggest you install the shifter detent from g body so that you don't accidentally shift into neutral, a cheap 25$ investment that will make sure you get the most out of the trans brake. Make sure you do not ever put shifter into first while car is rolling! This takes a bit of practice but once you get the hand of it look out, my rear view mirror has ended up on the floor more than a few times.

PS- Make sure you bump the shifter with the palm of your hand , don't try to hold onto it or you will most likely end up pulling it back into first if you launch hard, you don't need to hold the shifter button so bumping it works best, practice practice.

pacecarta: Thanks for this--have a trans with it installed in the GN, many years ago. It shocked the car so bad I was concerned for the damage it could cause. It felt like side stepping a clutch car at 5000 rpm! Having this info, I feel better about trying it again.

It was a long time ago, but Mallender kind of dropped off the radar...

Jay, If my brake parts ever arrive, I'll be more than happy to put on the DR's and give you a t-brake launch, It doesn't hook great at the track, not worried about breaking it on the street

Eric: Can't wait for your Hydroboost to get here--I want to see her run!

Don't be dropping it into first while rolling or you will be replacing parts in a hurry, sounds like you have the Stage Right to me. if I remember correctly it came with the different shift detent.

You are correct--it did.
