Trans Filter

I getting ready to do the spring cleaning on my 86GN. I picked up a Fram ft1057B filter.Before I install it,is it worth it to seal the seam on the filter ? I 've seen it done with RTV,but I don't see the RTV sticking after the trans fluid gets at it.( I know it needs it dry first).The last thing I need is junk in the fluid.

Install the filter as is. Do not use silicone inside the pan area.

Yes. The rtv works great. Keeps the filter from sucking air and it won't come off. People been doing this for years with no problems. Try a before and after test with the filter. The rtv seals it right up.

I always have installed the filter as is...no sealant

Take a trans filter and cover the intake hole with something and try to suck air through the pickup tube. You'll be able to hear the air leaking. It gets in around the edge where the metal and plastic meet. Now run a bead of silicon around the edge and seal that up. Let it dry and then try the same test. It will be all sealed up. When you take off the front edge of the filter is uncovered, it will suck some air which is easier than fluid. The rtv prevents this.

does this apply to a 700-R4 filter as well? because that is what I use with my rebuilt 200-4R tranny

Thanks for the replies. I did check the filter and it leaked air around the seam. I sealed it with J-B Weld instead of RTV.I know that won't come loose.

Is all of that stuff is submerged in trans fluid, it shouldn't make a difference.

No, the 700 filters are sealed better. No need to modifly.
