Hey all,

I'm new to this awesome website and I have been reading and already learning a whole lot. I have a few questions regarding transimision shift handle. If you have a vehicle with a shift handle on the steering column, how difficult would it be to swith it to a floor shift? Do you have to replace the whole transmission or is it simplier than that? Your expertise is greatly appreciated.

nope, you don't need to replace the trans- just the lever on the side.
as for inside the car, there are a couple of ways to go about the switch
1-you can just put an aftermarket floor shifter in and just take the handle out of the column.
2- you can do it the "correct" way and get a floor shift column, center console, shifter, and bucket seats (and about a million other small pieces) and put it all into your car.

I apreciate the quick reply. I was just asking because I do have the bucket seat and center console and pretty much most of the goodies to make this change. However, since I have never done that before, I rather ask the experts here at this site. Thanks. I'll be sending pictures later on when I get a chance.

If you have all the stock setup parts the only thing you will have to fabricate is the mounting brackets for the console and the shifter which are normally welded to the floor tunnel. I can send you a picture of these brackets if needed. I am in the middle of parting out a 86'T with a floor shifter.

I just did this about a month ago.

I used mounting brackets from a ratty rusted out GN parts car. Before I cut them out (there 3 brackets total) with an air powered cutting wheel, I made a diagram using my 9th grade drafting skills to carefully plot out the exact location where the brackets should be. I would suggest U do the same thing, so U know exactly where things should go. I welded the brackets to the floor, but Im sure u could get away with bolting them to the floor also. My buddy helped me switch the steering column also, but that was not something I had to do.
