Transmission staying in first too long

I just got my car running and driving and now my transmission is staying in first gear too long...it just keeps revving and finally shifts too 2nd. I have heard some people talk about a "TV" cable being out of adjustment on here...could it be that? How can I check? I really hope I don't need a transmission

That is really good to hear. I remember reading that something out of adjustment can burn up a trans in minutes...is that the tv cable or something different?

AT what mph does it finally shift at? If it is like 30mph it is probly the governor as stated above. If it is just a little bit late it may be the tv cable. Take a picture fo the tv adjuster and post it up for us to look at. also let us know the mph it shifts at.

Being low on trans fluid will make it shift at higher rpm also.

It can't hurt to see if the level is low if you haven't checked it in awhile.

The pics I took on my phone are very poor quality so I'm not going to post them. Tomorrow I am going to check fluid, check t.v. Cable adjustment, and then check the springs in the governor if that is relatively simple to do. Does anyone have a link that explains how to do that? Also, the car shifts when I let off the gas if that helps any. Thanks for all of the posts and keep em coming!

You have to drop the pan for the governor. Might as well check everything else first. If you do drop the pan, put a drain plug kit in it, left rear corner vertical flat spot. Makes life alot easier down the road.

Just checked the T.V. cable and it was all the way in (towards the firewall) and I couldnt see any "notches". I adjusted it like it said in the link that "williamsGN" posted and it is still staying in first gear until I let off the gas. I will post pics of what it looked like before and where it is now.

The notches are on the cable are on the backside of the bracket, towards the firewall, though they really aren't relevant since you set it up. I'd make sure the fluid is full, use a socket extension to push in the button for the cable on the side and push the cable one click forward.
For initial setting, I pull the cable as far back as it will go, then push the pedal to floor and you will hear it click as it moves forward, afterwards there should be just the slightest slack on the cable where it comes out of the cable housing and attaches to the linkage.

fluid is actually over full...it is almost to the bend on the dipstick. Could being over full cause it not to shift?

No, most go over approx a quart to prevent the filter from sucking air on hard launches.

well I guess Wednesday I will be pulling the trans pan and inspecting the governor springs unless anyone thinks of something else I could check first.
