So tomorrow I will be pulling the trans pan. What do I need to look for? does anyone have pics or links to good transmission discussions?
does the car hit rev limiter if your foot is to the floor or does the car seem like it is straining to rev ?

It seems to me that when I adjusted my TV cable years ago with the car off, I had somebody hold the throttle full open at the throttle body by hand. Then with my 2nd and 3rd hand I pushed in on the gold anodized "D" on the backside of the TV cable bracket while pushing the nose of the cable sheath of the TV cable toward the firewall as far as I could. Mine has always shifted well; I could never get it to "click" when adjusting like everyone else is able to do. :(

The governor is in the rear of the pan. The little springs will probably be in the pan when you drop it. They could be slung back in behind the speedo gear though. You'll see when you drop the pan.

I have not floored the car yet, 3500 rpm is the most it's seen but difinately should have shifted way before then. The car sat for 15 years if that helps any too

Thanks for all of your help. I will keep you posted on what I find

This is what I found when the same thing was happening to me.

hopefully the spring popped out...

check magnet when you drop the pan, see if there is any clutch material.

TV valve could also be sticking
(try disconnecting tv cable and pull it out and let it snap back about 15-20 times)

i had same problem with 1-2...took pressure test...numbers came back below minimums

trans is currently apart in my garage at the moment waiting on parts in the mail.

so far I this is what I've found:
  • scratched pump cavity
  • burnt 4th gear clutches
  • burnt direct clutches
  • burnt second gear band
  • scorn direct clutch drum
if you need pics or anything to help you let me know...all my shit is just laying around

Thanks! Believe I have the flu so I didn't mess with it today but hopefully I will be able to in the next few days. I'm sure I will need help identifying parts and what they are supposed to look like.

Does the car shift 2-3, and 3-4 ok? I had the same thing happen to me but I've been to lazy to pull the pan and check the gov. Id be very interested in what u find.

It won't go into 3rd or 4th at all. Hopefully I feel alright tomorrow so I can pull the pan. I will post my findings. Car sat for a really long time so I'm hoping it's just gummed up or something

Hello,sams86GN I had the same problem,An what I did was find a big open parking lot, then throw it in reverse let it rip a couple times.I guess whatever was in the gov was kicked out.worth a shot

I'd avise against that. If there's a problem with these cars, even if just in the tranny, it's never a good idea to "let it rip" when there's a known issue. If the gov spring popped out, it can not pop back in using this method. It needs to be reinstalled in the gov as it's most likely in the pan or close by.

I'm gonna try pushing the gas pedal to the floor 15-20 times without the car running, take it for another test drive, and see if that helped any. I've read some posts that suggest that. If not, I'll drop the pan and have a look. Also another thing I should mention, on the last "test drive" when I got back home and put the car in park it was making a noise that sounded like it was coming from the flywheel. Is this a sign of something? It didn't do until the very last time I drove it though.

I really didn't know what to take pics of so here's a few

UPDATE:
Pressed the gas to the floor 15-20 times. Took it around the block. Same thing.
Dropped the pan, fluid is real dark if you can't tell in the pics. Magnet is covered in metal flakes and in the middle of it I found a few big pieces of something...very thin metal I guess. Unfortunately, there were no springs in the pan so now I have no idea what to do. Anything I can look at or should I just take it to the transmission guy?

I reckon I'm gonna try to pull this thing out over the weekend and take it to the shop Monday. Figured I would get a deeper pan while I was at it, but just looked at kirbans and they are 229 which is about twice what I had in mind haha. I think I will go back stock. Any tips while the trans is out?

Have someone go through it and install all the billet goods with good clutches, and extra clutches, and be done with it. One thing I've learned is that anything not done right the first time on these cars will bite you down the road.

x2

A deeper pan, 700r4 filter, and overfilling the fluid by 1 quart is def a good idea.

Here is a cheaper alternative to the deeper pan:

HIGH FLOW FILTER AND SUMP EXTENSION KIT #24RCC/HFFK $89.99

Another good idea is to install a drain plug kit in the pan. Helps control the mess when you gotta drop the pan.
