Hi All,
Looking for a used chevy or gmc truck to pull a tow dolly.I am thinking a 1500 model with the 5.7 liter 350 engine.I have been looking at the 2500 models also. The 3500 1 ton models are to heavy and would not be great on gas.The 2500 models I don't think are great on gas either.Need something with pulling power and some what good gas mileage, althoug with a truck,I don't think Iwill get good gas mileage.Open to your suggestions.
Thanks...

What kind of weight are you thinking about pulling? The 2500's have the 4l80e or 4l85e (depending on year and engine) trans and a full floating rear end which is much better suiting to pulling heavier loads. I have owned numerous trucks over the years and I wouldn't buy a pickup unless it was a 3/4 ton or 1 ton. The weight of a 2500 isn't that much more than a similarly equipped 1500. If you go with an older 5.7 litre, make sure it is a Vortec and has the 4.10 gears. If you go with the newer 6.0 or 8.1, the 3.73 gears would be fine. Good luck.

If you can swing it, the duramax is an AWESOME truck! I LOVE my 02 and it will pull anything with wheels LOL

I get 16-17 empty in town and around 20 on the highway.

The 2500's are built WAY stronger then the 1/2 tons but I pulled a tandem axle car hauler all over with my 96 c1500 ex cab 2wd with the Vortec 5.0. Mileage sucked but it did the job.

HTH,

Vic
