I have been reading up as much as I can about which turbo to purchase for my set up but need some advice.
I was going to do the 44 or 49 route but have seen the 5857/5858 talked about a lot. My stock one is shot so wanna replace with an upgrade. My 87 is bored .30 over, 206/214 cam?, stretched stock loc cooler, stock intake, injectors, converter, and trans. This is what the previous owner told me. The converter will be replaced soon, 2800?, and the tranny going to get built. Right now the turbo is keeping me from driving the car so I want something that will accommodate the set up now as well as the up grades I'll be doing later. The car will be a daily driver with a few track days here and there. Any help from you guys would greatly be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

turbo should be chosen based on how much power you want to make and response time, injectors also.the converter must compliment the combo especially the rpm window.

Thanks for the replies. like I said this will be mostly a daily driver so I don't need real high boost levels now. Maybe down the line I would like to turn it up but something good all around. Heads are stock. Stock injectors. I believe those are 43's? As far as converter I don't have anything picked out yet. I was told before about getting a 9.5 non lock up but I am open for suggestions on something that would be good for daily driving and occasional track time. I wish I could do all upgrades at once but isn't happening. That's why I have to build this up gradually. Thanks guys.

I'm running a TE-44 on my daily driver and love it. You will need a set of blue top or blue stripe injectors though. Stock injectors are 28.5# btw. Bison is the man for turbo's here and will save you a few bucks on the upgrade.

I keep seeing a lot of guys running that one and having good results with it. Maybe the 58's are to much for what I need now. Thanks. I was way off on injector size. Lol. Are you running a stock converter? What # are the blue stripe/tops?

Stock heads and tc with delphi #50 inj. The stock tc will push a 49, 44 or 60 turbo on the street. The 10" or 9.5" higher stall tc's you can wait on unless you want better track results.

Ok cool. That's what I'm looking for. Something that will push my setup now. wasn't looking to spend $$$ on a tc yet. Since I'll get injectors could I go a little bigger and get the 60's or 80's and not have any issues? It would save another cost down the line and That way I'll have them when I upgrade more.

Are you sure the turbo was stock and not stock appearing ? hard to believe previous owner did motor work and left the stock turbo on..
I'm only saying this because maybe its a ta49 or a ta60/62 ,an untrained eye wouldn't know the difference if they see an inlet bell on there and it can be repaired and save you some coin$$.

Their are probably many more un-stock things on there that you may think are stock.

He told me it was and honestly I prob wouldn't know by looking at it. There's a lot of play with the shaft and it just looks beat. Is there anything that will stand out that will tell me otherwise? After looking at some of the work he did on the engine I doubt it. Lol. Mixed matched bolts and electrical tape everywhere. I'm almost doubting some of the mods he told me.

If the stock type bell is on it then it's likely a stock turbo. TA type turbos use a larger inlet bell. I forgot to mention the 44 uses an e-cover and the stock actuator work with it w/o modding it. You may also have to rework the air intake for proper fit.

Best thing to do is post up some pics of everything your not sure about.

Thanks for the replies. I'll snap a pic of the turbo tom and post it up. I'm pretty sure it's a stock unit but will wait to see what you guys say.

IMO, a 9.5 converter is going to be too loose for your needs.

And Bison is your man. Talk to him.
