Turbo Shield or Not?

Just wondering what the purpose was to the shield and if it was safe to run without it. Any disadvantages to running without it?

I don't run one. Took it off to polish it and it came out kinda crappy and just never put it back on. I think the biggest reasons for one is so people dont touch the turbo when its hot and to keep some heat off of the underhood insulator. Actually wrapping the turbo might be of some performance benefit but I don't believe the shield is.
