I'm replacing my trashed TA-49 with a TE-60 which failed IMO from some serious turbo surge. I've since remedied the surging problem with the Tornado just before the TA-49 fagged out on me. I know the TA-49 is notorious for surge issues due to modifications easily moving it out of it's map range.

Question is: How temperamental is the TA-60 in regards to compressor surge? Anyone had surging issues with a TA-49 then went with a slightly larger turbo, such as a TE-60 and had no issues afterwards?

I think...you will lose the surge with a 60. Yes going to a 61 mm wheel will eliminate the surge. Not sure what wheel is on the 60. HTH:)

87geein,i hag alot of surge on my 49 with a cold air kit with the filter down by the tire, put the filter back inside the engine bay and no more surge, just some food for thought.

Hmmm, I actually had less surge with the air filter down under the fenderwell back when I was experimenting with different intakes. Volume pre-turbo and size of intercooler seem to be the major contributing factors of surge IMO. I also noticed that a sharper bend anywhere in the intake pipe significantly reduced surge. I guess I will slap it on when it gets here and see how it acts. If I still get the surge, I'll put the ol' Tornado back on.

I went from a ta49 to a te60 and have had no surge problems at all. Te60 has been on the car for over 2 years.
