thinking of rebuilting my stock turbo, I think the seals are wore out(leaking oil in the throttle body)...I'm kind of worryed to upgrade to a ta-49(the turbo sheild fits like stock). don't want to have problems, u guys think I should just keep it simple with the stock turbo...my upgrades so far and that's it are 009 injectors, 93-94 tt chip, adjustable fuel pressure regulator, hotwire kit, walbro340SS fuel pump, boost/water gauge(in the console pod),hooker exhaust with areo-chamber mufflers, rjc boost controller, boost set at 17lbs, shorty big mouth cold air cleaner with k&n filter, spring cleaning has been done, hoses replaced, intercooler cleaned, passenger valvecover breather, body-bushing installed, kirban's rear seat brace kit., everything esle is stock...What are the gains from TA-49 from stock anyways 20 horses..is it safe, I have no scan master, somebody esle tunes it, do I have to worry about knock?
 
Well if it is tuned right and you aren't pushing it you should be okay. I will be honest I never paid that much attention to the scanmaster anyway;) I check my gauges and know my car. I do blow alot of stuff up though...

Anyway sounds like you have the supporting mods for the upgrade. The cost of rebuilding the stocker will be similar to the cost of a new 49 unless you know somebody that knows somebody...


You will see a nice difference with the 49. 20HP would be very very conservative, should be much more... Get it tuned right keep fresh good stable gas in it and don't drive it like you stole it and you will be fine...
 
even with mostly stock now I don't really push it, :)thx for ur advice and reply....not sure yet, what's the max boost to run on a stock turbo without breaking it 17-18lbs?
 
Im going through the same thing. PTE wants $623. to rebuild a stocker. Kirban wants around $500 for a rebuilt one and $800 something for the TA 49. Im going to PTE and buying the TE 44 for $600 or Full Throttle. The TE 44 is the same as the 49 except for the outside housing. Check prices around but this is what I have found.HTH
 
I've run a TA49 and TE44, both work fine.

You have the supporting mods to support either. Bolt the slight upgrade on, get a new TurboTweak chip, and you shouldn't have any issues.

If you wanted to be safe you could back down on the spark plug heat range 1 step. I wouldn't say it's required, but it wouldn't be a bad idea if you're worried about being safe.

Also, because of the relatively low price and ease of install, I'd say a scanmaster is a must.

thx for replys and wisdom guys, I appreicated it..still not sure yet..I'm going to ask my grand nationalist that tunes it and see what he thinks I should do....thx again for the responses
