Getting back in the game after a week of mourning...today I decided to try adjusting my TV cable to help firm up my shifts some, as I'm being informed to "try this" before spending cash on a shift kit.

What I did was I marked the spot on the cable where it sat with a paint marker. Then I pushed in the D button and pulled the cable sheath back one click toward the firewall. I then got in the car and with the engine off, floored the pedal to make sure it didn't ratchet back up. It did not.

Took the car for a test drive....at a moderate pedal (between 1/4 and 2/3 of the way down) the trans shifted from 1-2 at 20 mph with a good kick and 2-3 at 40-45 mph with a little less kick. Going from 3-4...well, lets say I was cruising along moderately at 72 mph and had to lift slightly off the pedal to get the thing to shift from 3 to 4. When it did it also felt like the TCC kicked in at the same time, but I can't verify. All i know is it seemed like a HUGE drop in RPM.

Then I tried driving it ***** footing it around. Meaning not even 1/4 pedal. It would shift 1-2 at 18-22 mph and from 2-3 at 29-35 mph.

So I readjusted it back to where it was before and did another test. Now at moderate pedal it shifts from 1-2 at 15 mph with a good snap and 2-3 at 32-35 mph with a soft shift. 3-4 for me was over 60 mph.

So I'm not sure if I should leave it set where it is or should I put it back the way it was? I want my shifts to not have so much overlap in them.

Thanks in advance.

Try not to fool with it so much. I burned up a 700r4 doing the same thing you are. The tranny (governor) and the shift kit are built to shift when they need to. You can manipulate it a bit with the tv cable but any little adjustment is a major change. Just set it to where there is no play and no tension on the cable when the throttle is on idle, and any little throttle movement will pull the cable. If you want firmer shift, put a shift kit.

This is not the correct adjustment procedure and if I'm reading what you are saying correctly you're going to kill his tranny with low line pressure.

Thats works too. If you have the click assembly on the throttle. What if you dont have the OEM type assembly? If want to be perfect you would have to put a gauge to read line pressure and adjust it to the builders recommendations.

I wouldn't use anything but a factory adjustment system...If I needed one I'd either buy one used or get the one extreme automatics was offering that was a new direct replacement (Don't know if they are still offering it or not).

The appropriate way to adjust the t.v. cable is to depress the D shaped retainer, push the "ratcheting" section of the cable towards the firewall. Then get in the car and mash the pedal to WOT. t.v. cable should ratchet out and is now set. Any other method, as mentioned before, will lead to early trans failure.
