TV Cable Adjustment

Always thought you pushed in the button, pulled the cable back towards the firewall and then floored it.
Tranny started flaring at the 2-3 shift.
Went to a car cruise and saw a nice WE4.
Asked the owner about my situation and he said to floor it, then push the button and pull the cable.
No more flaring, but softer shifts.
What say ye?
