TV cable adjustment

I have a 87 GN, stock trans that was built, with a shift kit installed by the original onwer. My problem is the trans shifts good and hard, but if adjust the cable to specs, it doesnt shift until about 3500 to 4000 rpms, at normal driving. If you go wot it will not shift until you let off of the gas some. If you give it 3/4 throttle if does great. At wot it over revs before it need to shift. We went out on a backroad and worked with the cable in and out and it to shift a little better. At wot 1-2 gear at 5200 rpm & 2-3 gear at 4800 rpm. I want it to change about 4600-4800 at all gears. Could anyone help me figure out what is going on?

It has been that way from the beginning. With adjustment of the cable correctly, the trans shifts good & hard. It only will not shift at wot, it wants to over-rev itself, 5500 rpms plus. Thanks, Mike

Are you going by the factory, in-dash tach? That would be a no-no.

Second, if it doesn't shift until 3500 at light throttle, check the governor out. It may have lost the spring.

I am going by a aftermarket tach. If you adjust the cable by factory specs, the trans will not change gears until about 3500 rpms at normal driving. It shifts good & hard when it does shift. Thanks, Mike

shift problem

what shift kit was installed?
years ago i had a B&M shift kit installed by a local shop (in my 33k stock 2004r). after the kit was installed, my trans had the same problem you are experiencing. i took the car back to the shop a couple times to have them fix the problem but the trans never did shift correctly after the B&M kit was installed. i don't know if it was something that the shop did incorrectly when installing the kit or if there was a problem with the B&M kit itself. i ended up buying a new trans from BRIAN HOFER and have never had any further trans problems since :smile:.
