TV cable adjustment

I went to adjust my tv cableThe adjustment button was really hard to push in,had to use a screw driver.Pulled the cxable all the way ou to the fire wall.Let the button go and step on the gas wot and the cable clicked one time but did not ratched foward.So i push the button and adjust it by hand.Is this ok or normal and how many ridges should be sticking out in plain view.
I was having good firm shifts in 1-2nd,but 3rd was soft and a little strange,seemed like it took about 2 sec to complete the shift where all other shifts are 1 second.

Maybe I misunderstood, but you PUSHED the cable towards the firewall, correct?
If so and it didn't adjust does that mean the self-adjustment isn't working properly.
Is that possible?
