Autometer gauge reads 165 while scanmaster reads 195. Difference between the two seems to be a consistant 30 degrees. Replaced the temp. sensor for the ECM, still no change. I would believe the Autometer to be correct, since Ive opened up the radiator, which I don't think I'd be doing if it was really 195. Car has a 160 stat. Anyone experience a difference between gauges and ECM? I can't see any real drawbacks to the ECM misread, figure at least it will turn on the fan sooner.

I would tend to trust the cooant temp sensor/ECM. The gauges (VDO or Autometer) out there are good, but can be off. The coolant sensor and gauge sender are in different location, but not that much of a difference should be seen. In short, try another sender and/or gauge.

Note: Your fan uses a seperate switch. Most likely it comes on at 165 degrees. How is that responding?

Hope this helps,
John @ ESP

my vdo gauge reads about 30* higher I trust the scan master and direct scan and use the vdo as gauge to "see" if it is getting to Hot.

Find someone like an AC guy that has one of those fancy thermometers that you point and shoot. Pay him 5 bucks to shoot the water neck , radiator, etc. I would temd to believe the scanmaster especially if you replaced the sensor and it didn't change.
