I used to work for Aamco Transmission. Rear wheel drive Cars, especially automatics (USING LIFTS) are easy. Manual Tranny's are a little bit more difficult at times, if you don't line up the Pilot Bearing correctly.

As far as Transmissions, the worst transmission I pulled in the 80's cars were the Pontian Fieros (Rear Transaxles), and Dodge Minivans (Front Wheel Transaxles)

STOP CRYING LIKE A LITTLE BiT(H .......... , you get a GREAT deal on a tranny and then you wanna complain i didnt include the install with the price ...........i got a driveshaft with your name on it  In the same time it took you to post this you could have called me and i would have come over there to help you out . Im calling you now

All i can do is lol and feel the pain too. been there, done that, and will not go back with out help!!!!

I thought I was gonna pee on myself!!!!  Been there tooooo many times. I remember the first time my uncle told me to get in the car and push the clutch pedal to get that last 1/2" on a T5. I must have fought that last 1/2" over 10 hours on all the times I swapped trannys and clutches. Great story and good luck with the install. Jon Hanson

My car was a test mule for converters this year...I had the tranny out more times than I care to talk about:p I even did it in the rain at Norwalk during the 2 hour delay.

Here is my favorite shortcuts:

-AN lines and fittings for the tranny lines. Way easier to remove and install than the stock hard lines.

-A couple of extensions and swivels for the top 2 bolts. I do not remove the coil pack.

-just a normal jack..you learn the balance points of the tranny after a few times;)

I can r&r a tranny in about 2 hours. That's a th400 with a scatter shield (makes it more of a pita!)

Here's proof of the Norwalk deal last summer. lol

My worst tranny pull was on a 71 Camaro in Pennsylvannia in a snow storm while parked on a gravel parking lot......and while I had the owner of the car help me, we did it WITHOUT a jack for the trans.....did it BY HAND! Now THAT sucked!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you own a Turbo Buick....

...you are guaranteed to HAVE to take the tranny out [at least three times] - The first time i did was a learning experience too... now i can probably drop it in about 1/2 hour. No need to remove the coil pack - the key here is - EXENSIONS i use a swivle joint and 2 long extensions and sometimes switch out to a long and a short extension....a good LED drop light so you can see all the bell housing bolts... NO BIG DEAL - just takes practice [you'll see by the 2-3 time - it will be a piece of cake] you will remember everything.

ps you can avoid having to remove the tranny so many times. If you by from a reputable guy who knows what he's doing. our cars are TORQUE Monsters.
[but then you wouldnt have the tranny experience - a trade-off, i guess]

"the key here is - EXENSIONS i use a swivle joint and 2 long extensions and sometimes switch out to a long and a short extension" - Ding! Ding! WINNER!!!!!!!!

the trick is a impact swivel, not the welfare universal style, & a 24" extension. I can have a tranny out in about 15 min. the only reason to open the hood is to have more light.

I used air tools on the crossmember bolts, but not on the bellhousing bolts. Me skeered! ;)

Hmmmmmm. I had extensions to the tail shaft. Maybe i'll just get em all out and see what happens. Its a CK stage 2 tranny so i hope it doesnt have to come out again. Its replacng a tranny built by DELL transmissions when it was sent to ME and Andersons.

a good 3/8" air ratchet, NOT a gun, & all done.

Yeah, I've done bellhousing bolts with an air ratchet., for removal only! Question, what is your method for trans lines? I use a wobble extension with crow's foot sockets. That's the most tedious part of the whole process, IMO. Everything else is a piece of cake.

Did mine in the garage and wish I wrote down my procedure in case I need to do it again. Bought some 4x6's and cut down to size to fit under my ramps. If I remember correctly I drove up on the ramps and then jacked up the rear and put my other set of ramps under the rear tires. Then I jacked up the front while on the ramps and slid the 4x6's under the ramps. Then did the same to the rear. Bought a platform for my floor jack to put under the tranny and let her down. Was still tight getting the trans out from under the car while on the jack so used my other jack to put the car up a bit higher in the front. My car sits pretty low so a little extra height is needed.

the first time is a bitch, but I never over tighten them up. I am always able to just use an open end wrench, because I tighten them just enough so they don't leak.
