I finally got the bearing cap off, which was a feat unto itself!!!!(I think I could rewrite the instructions found on the gntype board and offer some additional advice/instructions..lol) Anyway, I started working on it this AM.I got a long skinny flat head screw driver and started digging the "factory" (?) sealent out of the side rails.I sprayed a lot of carb cleaner to try to soften the RTV "stuff" ... I finally got all of it out in bits and tiny pieces....took a 1 1/2 foot long punch and put in a bolt hole wiggled it front to back and walla..it came loose and came off......upon close examination lo and behold.... NO rear seal or even any evidence there was ever one installed..... The top half yielded the same results.....( I ran a long wire tie through it with NADA results....
Now lets back track..a friend and fellow GN owner asked me what the the oil pick up screen looked like when I took the pan off..I told him it was completely blocked with a debris that felt like card board..he said that was what was left of the factory rope seal.....Anyway, I'm sure that the loose rear pan bolts, lack of a rear oil seal, caused my GN to dump a stream of oil when I would pull into my inclined drive way, or park it at work after a 10 mile drive and was(is) responsible for my decline in oil pressure.....

Contrary to some advice given to me by the fine folks who have followed this thread, I used the Fel-Pro neoprene side rail seals and "nails" and the blue rubber Fel-Pro pan gasket..It would be difficult at best to "pump" anabolic RTV sealent into the side rails because I didn't pull the motor........And it may leak again but I feel confident it won't dump the oil out as it did without any seals at all.....So that's it!!! I'm going to put oil in it Thursday (20-50 Castrol) and will let the board know of my success or failure........Incidently, this is the first time I have ever done this type of repair to any of the cars I've owned........

Thanks for all the responses to this thread guys!!!!

Would I do it again??? In a new york minute!!!! I learned a lot and if I was marginally successful I feel I accomplished a lot...

Glad to hear things are going better now ;)

I personally prefer using the side seals AND nails (per my right up in another thread). My rear seal hasn't leaked so much as a single drop in over 40,000 miles. :D

Sounds like I may be on the right track if you haven't had any leakage.........I am considering using CASTROL synthetic oil when I put it in Thursday............The engine has about 40,000 miles on it.........the pan was super clean with no sludge deposits, etc, so I thought I would change to a synthetic oil.........any thoughts????

Nope, nothing wrong with switching to synthetic even at this point.

Same here, neoprene side rails with nails, 2 piece Real rear seal (ropes are for boats) and the silicone Felpro pan gasket. 5w30 Mobil 1 after break-in with conventional oil and no leaks...even after re-using the pan gasket several times.
I grabbed a spare cork pan gasket expecting to have leaks, but it's still in the package :)
