upgrade turbo

I want to upgrade my 87 t, using a t-3 flange turbo. I'm a little confused about how to compare turbos with the stock Garrett unit. When a/r is referred to, are they talking about the turbine, or the compressor? What does "trim" mean? Any suggested t-3 flange turbos for a stock, rebuilt 3.8? Thank's, dazed newbee
