Got the eng out right now ,but trans is still in place..I want to up grade my trans with parts out of a worn out BQ I have laying around..I know I have to change the V.B. , seperator plate, governor, press reg spring, and boost valves from the BQ ,,but what I need to know is can the pump be removed from the trans thats still in the car, minus the engine, will I have any problems alinging things up when I go to put it back in..you know, trans are usually in a vertical position when they are assembled, not in a horizonal position ?? I did this once to a TH400 with no problems, but dont know about 200r4 .. Also is there a better choise in pump pressure springs than a old BQ ?? I`m only interested in street hi performance, with drags once in awhile ??? Thanks,,Jack

ps--the AA trans was stock in my 84 tt,,date codes match with car--dont know why GM did this, but AA is now newly rebuilt.

On the driver's side pan rail, towards the rear there should be the last 8 of the VIN stamped into the aluminum. The 84+85's had BQ trannies originally. The date may be from an 1984 Somethingelse. I've got a couple of these as cores. I've seen a couple guys here use an old yoke and stand the trans up to remove and reinstall the pump. But the pan has to be off and the solenoid and filter out. Hope this helps.

upgrade AA to a BQ---pump/spring/boost valves

What I`m asking is ,can I remove the pump assy while the trans is still in the car,,engine is out,so I can get to the front of the trans real easy.. What I`m afraid of is,will the rest of the trans stay put after I pull the pump to change out the pressure spring, and boost valves ?? This would be a great oppertunity to up grade this ho-hum SHIFTING AA trans to a BQ version ,cause its easy to get to the pump NOW----Also do you think the old BQ spring has enough tension left in it to do the job (has 90k ), is there a way to shim it to make more pressure ?? This AA trans came stock in my 84tt,,code dated 12/83,,all the dates match the car..maybe they ran out of BQs` when this one was made ?? If I`d only known this before I had the AA rebuilt,,I`d just gone out and bought a BRF or BQ,,but whats done is done, now I have to upgrade my AA,after all ,I do have the old BQ for parts----let me know about that pulling the pump out with the trans still in the car,but no engine----Jack

I personally wouldn't try it. I do 200-4R rebuilds and have them stand up straight when I do them and things can move forward or tilt when removing the pump when horizontal. I have done it this way with 350/400's and never killed anything but I wouldn't try it with the 200-4R.
