Well, I finally got 'round to doing some things with my can of Sem Black Trim paint. First was the T-Top edges. I masked the glass from the black trim edges with regular masking tape. I sanded them down with 400 wet/dry Trymite sandpaper, gave the black trim edges a great, wet sand. Then wiped clean. After sanding, I removed the masking tape, then wiped the edges with Acetone. I again masked the glass top with Frog tape up to the edge to be painted. Then the rest of the glass was masked with paper. (both sides) At this step, make sure the trim to be painted here is clean, but don't wipe with Acetone as it could leach under the Frog tape. I put three light coats of Sem Trim, waiting 3-5 minutes between coats. Then, after drying for about 30 minutes, I removed all masking. Waited 48 hours, then put them on the GN. They look brand new!:p Wow. Just by following the directions on the can.
Then I got a pair of door edge guards (B91 option) from the boneyard for $20. They were chrome, so I sanded the chrome part of them with 400 grit. They had dents in them, so I put a small conical grindstone in my Dremel tool, and lightly ground back and forth over the dents, using long strokes. Little at a time. Got all the dings and dents out! Then sanded with 400grit again, wiped down with Acetone, then applied three light coats of Sem Trim Black paint...voila! They came out looking brand spanking new. The whole secret is preparation. I got too excited to take pictures as I wanted to share this with you ASAP. The Sem Trim Black is great trim paint, it matches the rest of the black out trim on the Grand Nationals and Turbo Regals. Well, guess I'll go have a beer now as things have never gone this right in a long time. Hope it helps someone here, and next time, I'll post pictures.
By the way, you can only get Frog Tape at Sherwin Williams paint stores. I bought the last roll at Home Depot, and they told me that was the last roll they were allowed to sell as Sherwin Williams decided that THEY only wanted to be the ones to sell this Frog Tape, since it works so great. That's in this area of Virginia I live in.

Mark, just for my own information, how well has this paint held up to chipping? First time I've ever used it...was recommended this paint by my buddies here on the board. Is it chip resistant, especially your wheel well trims? If it is, this may save me getting my wheel well trims powder coated, as this Sem Trim may do the job. Any thoughts?

Mine have held up real well... might be worth the money to powder coat, if you can for long term, but could also buy a few cans of paint for touch ups also, my .02.

Thanks, Mark. Around this area a painter quoted me $20 for each wheel well trim to powdercoat in satin black. Just haven't had the chance to drive the 45 miles to his shop. It will be for the long term, so I guess I'll get the wheel trims powdercoated. I can only find the SEM Trim Satin Black up at Carlisle, Pa, for $10 a can. But I can never get up there and wish I had bought two cans instead of one. Thanks for your opinion. I appreciate it.

I would say that is pretty reasonable for the powder coating, worth having them done once and for all. I just went out and checked my wheel wells and didn't see any chips on any of the wheel well trim-- I did similiar to what you did, about 3-4 lite coats and then let dry for hour and reassembled on car. I probably have 2-3000 miles since they were done (car isn't a daily driver).

SEM trim black is the best there is in a rattle can......... I have done many cars with this paint. And your correct........ its all in the prep.

Do it, the SEM trim black won't hold up on the rear wheel moldings. It gets too much debris kicked up from the front wheels.

Will do. Thanks for your input. Makes sense on these trim moldings with all the crap kicked up from the road nowdays.

I used SEM on all my trim including the wheel well moldings three years ago and they have held up really well. Granted I have only put 3k miles on my car since the resto.

SEM paint is the best, But I recommend getting the wheelwell trim powdercoated too. I had it done (Cost me $106, They media blasted it too) and I have been daily driving my GN since April 1st; About 7000 miles since and zero chips so far.....

I did a repaint in 2003 and sprayed the wheel mouldings with SEM at that time. By last year the lowers were so chipped they looked nasty. Last spring I pulled them off again and blasted and powdercoated satin black. 2 years 4000 miles no chips so far.

I always thought the SEM Satin black was a little too dull to match the original factory look...I use the SEM Gloss Black...it looks like Satin after it dries...seems like the SEM paints are 1 step duller than advertised...JMO...

sem paint works great. mine still looks great after 10 yrs, mostly in the garage

Did anyone ever run into different shines with the SEM trim black? I had about 4 cans and use it on everything. I was in Carlise and saw a guy selling it. All the same part number on the can but one is more flat then satin sheen. I ran into 2 cans like that. Strange. I spray that stuff on everything that I don't powder coat. Holds up nice and looks great. I did a front license plate frame on my daily driver and that did chip up a little over time. But over all it holds up well and looks great!

That's what I was saying...I've only had 2 cans of the Satin but it just dried too dull for my liking...almost a flat black...maybe I got some bad cans??...who knows...

I used DuPont Satin Black A-5099S. I was told this is the correct trim paint for GN's. I have not seen SEM black you are talking about but I am sure it works too. I had to buy it from an auto paint store. Just info...
