I finally converted over with all the right parts - pedal, new MC and Vacuum booster w/ new check valve and filter and I even installed the 89 TTA vacuum block.

The only problem is that when I hooked up the vacuum line to the booster the car barely idles - which i traced to a vacuum leak.
Guess where its coming from ? it seems that there's a noise coming from where the pedal linkage connects to the Booster underneath the dash. When I put my hand there I can feel a slight suction.

Do any of you guys w/ this set-up notice such a noise ?
can it be i have a faulty booster. Actually, that would be the second bad booster as I returned the first one when I heard this same noise.

thanks

Under the rubber boot where the rod comes out in the back of the booster, is a plastic casing. Because vacuum seems to be leaking from that area, sounds like it may be cracked. If it is, the booster is no good.

Another scenario would be that the plunger rod vacuum seal is cocked. Remove the booster, hook vacuum to it, and re-seat the seal by manipulating the plunger. This is probably the problem.

vacuum brakes

thanks red regal t,

i will ck it out tomorrow - my left leg is getting starting to cramp up from all that hard stopping w/o the vac. assist.

by the way, i just now noticed your info on your sig and that's pretty impressive - all those miles on one of these motors.

i would have never imagined they lasted so long.

what does it run w/o the the alky ?

thanks

Well, truth be told, I first broke it at 180K, went 60K and broke a main cap, and now I'm going again.........right now at 277K.

I've had the alky on here for almost 5years, so really have no clue what it does without it. SLOWER, for sure. ;)

On your booster, it's probably the seal that is cocked off center at the base of the rod. Try moving the MC out of the way and disconnect the rod from the pedal and try to jiggle it around. If that doesn't work, take it out and take the boot off and give it a look. I'd bet that's the problem. Also, hook it to your vaccum line and start the car with the booster out to ascertain where the leak is. This will help you re-seat the seal if that's the problem.
