valve body check balls?

I'm putting my BRF valve body back in, after my continuing disaster with a manual valve body, when I noticed theres only 2 check balls in the valve body side. The #8 check ball (1-2 shift valve) isn't there. I couldn't find any mention of having only 2 check balls on the valve body side in any of the archives, and was wondering if I somehow lost it, or if its possible it was never there to begin with.

You are ok if you want firm 1-2 shift. if not reinstall...3rd ball
