Is there any advantage to using a 13 vane rotor over a 10 vane rotor? I've seen tranny ads claiming they used "high-volume 13-
vane pumps", but it seems to me that the opposite would be true.

I don't think there is a real major advantage

Between the 10 vane and 13 vane pumps. The pumps in our transmissions {2004r-700r4} are variable displacement pumps anyways.

One advantage that the 10-vane has over the 13-vane is strength. The additional 3 vane slots leave the rotor pretty 'cut-up' so to speak. Remember that the rotor originally was designed with 7 slots so the 13 vane pump nearly doubles that without changing any other dimensions.

There are no volume advantages to any of these; the additional vanes merely smooth out subtle pressure pulsations.
