Iv never been to vegas and was thinking of taking the wife for a getaway. What are some of the hot spots and better places to stay thanks!

Most first timers (and then some) prefer to stay on The Strip. (Mandalay Bay, Luxor, MGM, NY NY, etc.)

I always tell people to "get off The Strip during the day, and get on it at night."
See:
Hoover Dam
Red Rock
All the free things at the mega resorts (water show, volcano, car show, etc.)
Shelby's Cobra factory (near the track)
Grand Canyon (about a 4+ hour drive)
and so on. There are tons of web sites on all the things to do here.

Went back in March of this year for the 1st time (honeymoon) & we had an absolute blast! We stayed at the Monte Carlo it's a little older but GREAT room rates, CLEAN & a nice central location on the strip and it's next door to the super luxury Bellagio.

Do a little online hunting before booking a room, you can get some VERY reasonable room rates through the casio's websites & most will beat the rates that get posted on the search services like Expedia or Orbitz.

Things the wife & I have been recommending to people:

The buffet at Paris, the food was absolutely incredible!

Freemont Street, they've done a great job restoring some of the "original" casinos, JUMBO frozen drinks in a plastic football  , some cool cheapo souvenier shops (gotta get some goofy tourist crap right?!) & the light show on the huge overhead canopy (covers an entire city block) is worth seeing.

Aquarium at Mandalay Bay has a VERY cool sunken ship room & is very well done overall (compareable to somethig at Seaworld IMO)

Excalibur , this is one of the oldest casinos on the strip but was fun, has a big breakfast buffet that is pretty darn cheap & the dinner theatre / knight's tourney was a hoot.

Car display at the Imperial Palace

Buffet at the Rio, it's an off-strip casino & VERY tacky theme here but MAN the buffet there is HUGE & pretty dang good for the money.

I'm probably forgetting a ton of stuff but hopefully this helps a bit :)

On top of the Stratosphere there is an amusement park ride, one of those things that shoots you up in the air, but you are already starting high up - that is a must do.
I think it is in the Mandalay Bay, there is a bar that has a zillion kinds of rum and rum based drinks - that is OK, unless you like rum then it is must do.
I have heard that a helicopter ride through the Grand Canyon is a must do, but expensive.
MOST IMPORTANTLY, before you go, find out what shows are playing and get tickets ahead of time. The shows will be sold out, and even though they are expensive, I have heard that they are really worth the cost.

I just got back on Monday. I went for a bachelor party. WHAT A CITY! We stayed at Mandalay bay, it was awesome. We pretty much just stayed on the strip, checked out the other casinos/hotels, and of course we had to see the adult entertainment (titty bars). You will have a great time there.
