There is a lot of great help on this forum but unfortunately for me there is only so much that " I" can do with it. I post some of the trouble that I've been having with my 86GN and you guys have given me great advise. I only wish that I could really prove that its great advise. Now I get to my point that it would be nice to have a VIDEO TUTORIAL to help diagnose a few common problems with our money pits. Recently I was asked to check the ohms of the IGN module. Sounds easy enough but i have no idea how. Does this sound like a stupid idea?
1. Check IGN ohms
2. Check Fuel pressure
3. Check Voltage
4. Check Relays
5. Misc. other stuff that commonly goes wrong.

I think we have enough of a following to make this beneficial.

I agree. Doesn't the Kirban's have books with pictures? We just need to take them from paper to video.

Alot of us ADDHD..lol I have always learned by hands on, although I can read instructions, its so much easier if I watch and do, electrical is my demon but mostly under the dash stuff.

Good thread, theres a couple of video guys on here, maybe one might devise a plan to make it happen.

- One of installing and setting a cam sensor, heck all the sensors would be cool.

- Adjusting windows to seal against the weather strips correctly.

Thanks to anyone who takes on this project.

To "ohm" out the coil pack you need a voltmeter, you are measureing the amount of resistance in the coils. You can get some that have an autoscale feature which is nice and very easy to use. To ohm out the coil pack set the meter to ohms and put the two leads from the meter on each side of the coil, the meter will then give you a reading of X amount of ohms. You also use ohms to check to see if a wire is broken internally, or to see if a spark plug wires have excessive resistance, it will show "OL" on the meter or flash 40.00 (on mine at least). Basically you need a good voltmeter, or even better a Graphing meter (more complicated). With voltmeter you can check your TPS voltage, set-up cam sensors, ohm out wires, check to see if your fuel pump is getting power, or ground, read frequency of MAF's, Battery drains....................the list goes on :D.

I have this one, its a little expensive but it has a fast sample rate, and also a thermometer , and very easy to use.
ColketTech: PDI-920 Automotive DMM

Now this one is more complicated but shows you what the Waveform actually looks like. A awesome tool to look at injector pulse, o2 sensor cross-counts, TPS sweeps, MAF signals, Coolant temp sensor........ you get the idea :D. If you get a Kv Module you can diagnose the ignition system by actually watching the "burn time" and spark Kv. And wait theres more , if you have a "mini amp probe" you can see the electrical contacts on you fuel pump or starter are worn out, and you can also see how many amps a component is drawing. I dont think Snap-On sells these anymore, but you can find used ones for about $300, $500 ( with Kv module)
Snap-on Vantage Power Graphing Meter

Bottom line, you need a Voltmeter to do anything with these cars

Great that means you think its a great idea also!
You sound like the guy who needs to be the star of this production, do you need a make-up artist or have any special request before the video start:smile: Some stars have to have all white furniture or special fruit shakes! Hey we might be able to spring for a cute assistant, like uh Fergie or Beyonce';):wink:

I'm too good looking, people wouldnt be able to pay attention to the task at hand .

I would love it if someone would just video everything they did from the start of an upgrade project!!!

Maybe one of the sponsers could take a stock TR and start upgrading it with all of their parts that they sell and tape the entire installation. Make each portion an 'episode'. Since many of the vendors sell a LOT of different parts either through their own production or through drop shipping from another vendor, that would actually cover most of the common stuff as long as the right one took it up (full throttle? G-body? etc) and at the end they would have a 'this is who we are car' to show off at shows! (I know, most do already....)

I am actually seriously considering filming my upcoming fuel system upgrade even though I have never done one before for two reasons

1)if I do something wrong and not sure what, I can show the vid to people and they can tell me

2)everyone is told that swapping a fuel pump is easy, but some people (like myself) would still feel better having some sort of step by step (especially since my TR is my daily driver)

Just my thoughts.

ADHD is a terrible thing to have at 50 years old.

I too love videos or hands on.. i have such a hard time with written directions.

Maybe a few of the BIG BOYZ of Buicks around the country would make a DVD series of HOW to YOUR BUICKS.

I bet they would sell well.

Before the "get a new fuel pump"first!

A video to purchase would be #1 on the get list. Remember the get this first list.... " I'm a NEWBIE and would like to know what to do first to get my GN fast as a ZR-1 , dependable as a Toyota Corolla".:D Did we all ask something similar? And what follows is the LIST

Personally I think I could do a video, but half of its going to be edited for bad language
angry-smiley-001.gif
, and the other half of the video will just be me drinking, smoking and crying about it
sad-smiley-068.gif
food-smiley-012.gif
. It would be easier to take pictures.
