can anyone tell me what the difference between the two or adv/disadv. i am going to buy one just not sure if i need to spring for the 5-disc or if the single will do me fine. mostly street driven with the occasional race outing. also what is the recommended stall....i was thinking 2600-2800 for my combo in the sig.

Single disk is good for a 90% street driven car. Not designed to be locked at WOT. It is also just that, a single lockup clutch disk.

5 Disk: is good on street and all out race cars. Designed for locking at WOT
It has 5 disks instead of 1 allowing the force to be applied over a larger area. Therefore, it will live longer. You will also need a evacuation tube kit for this converter that runs about $70. It is required in order for the disks to engage and disengage properly.

Price, the 5-disk will run 200-300 more than the single disk.

2600-2800 is perfect for a 49. However, if you plan on going bigger turbo then I would go bigger stall now. Easier to change turbos than torque converters:cool:

I agree with everything 2 QK 4 U said.

5-disc is if you want to lock up your converter during a race for a couple extra MPH or tenths of a second at the track. Some guys go ahead and force the single-disc torque converters to lock-up but it's really not designed to handle that abuse and the clutch material will eventually fade and become useless. The 5-disc is strong enough to handle it.

So if you're serious about your track times and want to take advantage of running in Overdrive with a lock-up clutch then spend the extra for the 5-disc. If you're just going to the track for fun and would like to save the extra money, do the single disc.

I agree about the stall speed too, if you think you might end up with a bigger turbo go with a higher stall.

thanks for the info....i'm sure at some point i'll end up with a bigger turbo since i have changed it once already lol.

I have been told that the 5 disc is a bit noisey during normal driving, but I don't know first hand.

I have a vigilante single disc and I'm going to lock it (at 90MPH) next time at the track. The big end efficiency is pretty lousy so I pretty much need to (16% slip!).

You might want to look into a PTC unit before making your purchase. That's probably what I'm going to switch to although the jury is still out for me.

I have the 5 disc in a few friends 9 sec street cars ... drives fine on the street and the LU works great !! I run Bruce's (PTS) 9/11 in Melissa's street car .. she gained 5/6 mph locked

ordered the five disc today along with the vent kit......now just have to wait for the rest of the stuff

oh yeah i called it a vent kit huh lol

I found that interesting because some people claim that the pump tube kit causes fluid to puke out the vent. I thought maybe there was some other kit. I haven't driven mine enough to know - having exhaust system trouble at the moment. I recently had a 5-disc re-installed with the tube kit (re-installed because it wasn't locking, but it is now).

I believe if you call the converter people the new unit is a three disk.
And comes with a billet cover now. This is what i was told when i sent a 5 disk unit back for service. In a high hp application the anti balloning feature is nice to have.

hmmm that is interesting. is the tube big enough to throw that much fluid out?

I dunno. My trans guy reluctantly installed the tube and said to install a catch can on that tube. I haven't done it yet since I haven't really been able to drive the car much due to other problems.
