A better idea

The stock muffler is a very restrictive piece of junk. Consider using a stock location muffler with a crossflow design from Dynomax (Walker). With a bit of digging, I can come up with a stock number. The fit is tight, but the sound is great with no drone. I also have pictures of the install.
HTH.

Would appreciate the stock number and pictures of the install. Sound like the way to go. Thanks Doug

I searched high and low for an NOS stock muffler for the original location. Could not seem to find one. I ordered a Walker Quietflow 3 Muffler #22395 - Looks very original and well built. I ordered this one because it appreared to be designed for the stock location as indicated on Walker's Muffler Selection tool where you choose the make and model of your car and it shows you which muffler to order. (2 ports in and 2 ports out). It is not cheap but looks like the most stock muffler I have seen. I still have to have it installed. Maybe one day someone will start producing an aftermarket looking complete exhaust system. Gardner Exhaust used to but I guess there wasnt enough demand at the time so they dont anymore upon my last check with them. Take a look at their site. They had a aftermarket exhaust from the y-pipe all the way back to the tailpipes that looked perfect.

TurboPete, I appreciate your post as it gives a good suggestion for a similar design stock location muffler as asked by the original post. When I asked this question sometime ago, I always got unhelpful replies on this forum when asking for a stock muffler: Their crap, too retrictive, get the 3" dual this or that. I have no doubt that these dual muffler type systems may make the car go faster, look great, etc... But I have no need to go faster, I am not racing and want my car to retain its original appearance and sound. I feel that the stock exhaust is perfectly fine for regular driving. Its too bad that there isnt a section of the forum totally dedicated to maintaing stock GNs. I have no interest in blowing my head gaskets, seals, oil leaks from dragging the car down the street, going through sets of tires, etc... If someone is asking for a "stock location muffler", the odds are is that they are aware that most people have switched to a dual muffler design but want the stock location muffler that tucks up in front of the rear axle. They are likely aware of all the aftermarket designs out there and are aware of all the posts that say the stock muffler is too restrictive or crap. If someone asks for a "stock location muffler", that person is likely expecting a reply such as "so-and-so has one" or "they dont make it anymore but so-and-so makes an exact replica", etc... If someone posts a question such as "Whats the best muffler" or "Whats a good dual system" or "I need a Muffler, Any suggestions", then by all means go for it and let us know every muffler setup out there. It is frustrating as an owner of a fully stock GN when a stock specific question cant be answered without a poster telling you that stock is crap, etc...

For hauserc

I appreciate that you want to maintain a strictly stock GN.

I am one of the GN owners who prefers mild "bolt on" modifications.

The original post asked for input. As a substitute for the original muffler, I found my current setup to be quite good. It required removing the droning dual system and going back to the stock appearance, with better flow than the stock muffler.

In this case, I responded to a post with a suggestion that worked best for me. I will send my information in a way that you won't see it, so there won't be a chance for you to critique my posts. You should return to your "stock spot", which I suspect is under a rock...

Turbopete,

I was not critiquing your post. I actually said you answered the question.
